has anyone been able to get a helicoil in where the headers bolt up with the engine still in the car?

that is a pretty tight fit. Drilling the hole accurately will be the problem. If it were me, I'd take the head off and do it. that sounds like a lot of work, but it really isn't that bad.

You can if you have a 90 degree drill, and a short enough drill bit. You may have to trim a standard bit shorter and at that angle you have to drill slowly. You'll have to use a wrench on the end of the tap but if the headers are out of the way it can be done.

I did exactly what Jeremy said. I bought a 90 degree drill ($50 for a pneumatic one), a cheap bit, cut it, ground a new tip on the bit, drilled the head and then helicoiled it. I did it on the bolt that has the lesat amount of clearance. It can be done.
