Default Head repair questions

Bought a used head that had some damage to where the stud threads into the head and am weighing my options of what to do(sorry for the lack of pictures). I originally assumed that wielding it would be just fine, but the guy that is helping me with it suggested that we use a helicoil instead. What say you? Thanks once more.

Assuming you mean exhaust stud? If the threads in the head are damaged, just helicoil it. If i remember right its a M8x1.25 thread. Helicoils work very well and are actually advertised as being stronger than the original threads. I have used them on a number of occasions and never had any problems.

cool. I am going to do that. He was worried about the weld and taping it squarely.

bolt the manifold to the head by the good studs and use it as a guide to keep straight.

+1 on helicoils -- they are the perfect fix for screwed up exhaust stud holes.

+1 on Timeserts. Better than Helicoils.

Yeah after using timeserts, I'll never use a helicoil again. A bit pricey for the master kit though but a good thing to have in the garage.

+1 one on the time-sert, it's stronger and I believe made of copper as opposed to stainless steel.

I just did my first helicoil install on my Tercel, it blew out a spark plug and the heli coil fixed it.

The time- sert tools are more expensive, but if your not buying them, go for the time cert.

The helic will most likely be fine but I asked the guy what's the difference and he said "guys use the time cert when the heli coil fails!".,

I also had to have helic coils installed on the cam bridges on my built 22r motor
and they are holding up fine there so I have not had a problem with the Heli coils but for the record there is a difference.
