944S transaxle (AGP)- is it an 016 case or 083?
So I've found two different sources that claim the 944S transaxle code AGP is an "083" type gearbox.

The 2nd source says that 083 transaxles have a larger front pinion bearing, stronger ring gear, and .15" thicker 3rd gear. I'm starting a project build targeting around 400 horsepower, so I wanted this beefed up transaxle. I found one on eBay for $600 and snagged it. Being an AGP, there is no LSD or oil cooler. But I wanted to use an aftermarket LSD anyways, and a few people have successfully fabricated their own gear cooler setup, so I will go that route with it.
Now the confusing part - I got my AGP transaxle delivered this morning, and the case is stamped 016 instead of 083. So uhhhh.... what's going on? Are Clark's Garage and the other forum post both mistaken about them being 083's? Is it possible that my AGP has the stronger ring gear, pinion bearing, & 3rd gear despite being marked 016? I really hope it at least has the stronger ring & pinion since those are the biggest failure point in higher torque builds.

That is correct. The housing will still have a 016 part number. If you are looking at 400hp you should have gone with turbo or S2 transmission.
The S transmission might be OK but does not have any hardened internals as the turbo and S2 transaxles.
You can add external oil cooler in a few different ways. I carry parts for a few solutions in stock.
