Default 1987 944S Stock wheels to boxster wheels

Hello All, first time Porsche owner, excited to make it my own. I just picked up a black on black 87 944S, it has the stock phone dial wheels on there. A local guy had the wheels off a 1999 Boxster with good tires on there for only $250. I couldn't pass it up so I want to put them on the 944s. The question is I never switched out rims before and I know there is math that goes into this change. Hoping its easy math and it will work. The rims that I purchased are 8J-18-ET57 with 225-40-18 for front and 225-35-18 for rear. The width doesn't seem that different than stock. Will I need to do anything to make them work? Also anyone happen to know if there is a market for the stock rims with basically brand new tires on there?

Welcome to the forum.

8" et57 should fit on the front. Depending on the particular wheel, you may need a 5mm spacer to clear the bearing dust cap. What dimension is the rear wheel? 9" etXX? Is it running a 225/35 or 255/35?

Yeah I was thinking the fronts would fit. I just double checked the rears they are 9Jx18-E52 with 265/35R18 tires on there. I believe the offset is the same as stock and the circumference of the wheel will be about the exact height of stock. Now the issue may be the extra 1 inch sticking out and 1 inch sticking in.

The phone dials look much better than the Boxster wheels and they are correct for your car. I would rethink about not keeping them on the car.

Those should fit, as is, as well.

I put them on there with success. The offset was basically identical, the overall diameter of the wheel compared to stock were basically identical as well. In the rear it was a hint smaller than stock. The rim width in the front being 7.5 over the 7 was not noticeable. The rear being 9 fit no problem, I read in the manual an option on these were 8 inches so with that offset 1/2 inch in each direction didn't matter.

These are the turbo twist rims so they look really good on here. Personal preference I guess, I think those phone dials are terrible. Now if I came across some 16's of the Fuchs I would have put that on there. Couldn't really pass up 4 rims, and 3 really good tires for $250.

Next projects are:
Installing speakers and head unit since its already mid 90's aftermarket and only 1 speaker works right now.

Ordered the Bursch muffler, the one of there is pretty rusted.

Waiting on delivery of the MAX HP Russell Berry performance chip. From what I read this car really benefits from it.

Ordered the KLA Strut brace, not really sure why I don't plan on doing any track time, but I thought the $100 or so dollars wasn't that bad and worth it.

The winter not fun projects will be removing the Porsche decal across the back. To 80's for me.
Along with thinking about removing the front bumper pads. Already took off the license plate holder.
The rock guards are spidered webbed, they look painful to remove. The one on the fender is as well. Its funny one side has like the clear protectors and the other side are the flat black ones which are in good enough shape. Would like to match them.

IMO, don't try to make the car something it's not. This is an '80s car with roots in the '70s. If you're on a budget and want a newer Porsche, early 2.5 Boxsters are cheap and quicker than a 944 S with zero mods.

I don't think the op's mods are anything out of the ordinary. I don't follow the reference to turning his car into a later model with these minor mods.

By the way I have twists on mine, and although probably not my first choice, in Matt black they look ok. Each to their own I say.

A little off subject, but if you are new to the 944S I would add a check of the timing chain tensioner to my list of things to do this winter. The pads on these things don't last forever and a failure will cost more than your car. Check condition of cam teeth as well. If the chain has stretched, the cam can loose teeth or wear badly.

If its about a 944 it is 100% on subject. I do need to check out the timing belt. Would like to know clutch wear as well. Was going to change the oil out to VR1 racing oil and maybe spark plugs as well since not sure when they were done last.

Looking through the clutch inspection window on the bell housing, the distance from the end of the slave rod to the forward edge of the window for a new clutch is 18mm. Wear limit spec is 34mm.

In the pursuit of individual 'taste', another loses it's identity.......

Why buy a vintage Porsche ? What about the design elements did you find so distasteful that you find it necessary to add 10 year newer styling to a design which never incorporated it in the first place ?

Don't get it and never will.
WHAT is wrong with original ? Remove the bumper pads ? Change wheel design ? Why ?

Let the firestorm of rants begin ~

( not part of the 'overdone' agenda of modding Porsche design and expecting others to accept that line of thought ....... )

yeah. Another freakin' purist here
