The other day I was driving home when i started to hear metal on metal grinding and then a big clunk and my car (1984 944 NA) died and wouldn't start. So I towed it home and pulled the reference sensors and they had some dings on them (Pic attached). Could my bracket have gone out of adjustment and caused my flywheel to scratch the sensors a little bit? I don't want to stick new sensors in and have them destroyed too.

Take out your starter and look for damage to your flywheel. And any FOD.Those shouldn't look like that. There is something being tossed around in you bellhousing it looks like.
I took off the starter and noticed the dust cover was missing on the side of the bell housing and the flywheel looks good. I had my brother turn the engine from the front and saw that the flywheel pin was still there. Do you think I should stick new sensors in and turn it by hand to see whatever got in there is still in there or if its out start it up?
If the sensor made contact with the flywheel there should be damage on the bottom of the sensor. You may have some debris inside the bell that caused that damage.
