Default From dream to NIGHTMARE in minutes!

Picked up a 944 2.5 8v 1983

burning oil

LOTS of blue pumes of smoke

Creamy jizz in the oil cap and pipe

Oil leak at the front of the engine

Not sure what to do or where to go next!?

Guessing it needs at minimum a top end rebuild

Sorry to hear, must be disappointing.

I would do a compression and leak down test first to check cylinders. If any are bad borescope them. If the leak down fails and the cylinders are scored, probably best just to get another used known condition engine as it will work out much cheaper. The good news is na engines are cheap. Sorry to hear. Was the vehicle inspected before picking it up?

burning oil - could be as simple air/oil-separator seals, oil-cooler seals

LOTS of blue pumes of smoke - this sounds like bad rings

Creamy jizz in the oil cap and pipe - blown headgasket

Oil leak at the front of the engine - crank, balance-shaft and cam seals, these are easy. Could also be high-pressure power-steering hose.

Not sure what to do or where to go next!? - take it to mechanic familiar with 944s and have it thoroughy inspected.

Guessing it needs at minimum a top end rebuild - probably bottom-end as well with new rings & rod-bearings. See what the compression-test reveals.

As mentioned, easiest and most inexpensive is used-engine from junkyard/pick-n-pull. These usually go for $150-250 for a long-block with everything. You'd have to pull it yourself of course, but can be done in about 1-2hrs. These engines are bulletproof when properly maintained +300k-miles before needing rebuild. If you find a good junkyard sample, it can easiy run for another 10-years.
