Default Help with Speedometer and ODO

My cruise control works, so I know my speed sensor is OK. I have pulled my gauge cluster and checked the connections, cleaned the connections with eraser. Still no Speedometer, what would be the next thing to do? I know there is some kind of gear that breaks, but would that kill both the speedo and ODO, or just the ODO?

-Thanks!

If I remember correctly, the broken gear only keeps the odo from working. It's not a hard or expensive job to replace the gear, but when you do it you might want to put some really thin washers in there to take up some of the slack between the gears.

Don't reset the odo while the car is moving !

If the gear only kills the OD, then it must be something else, right? Anybody know the pinout so I can check if the DME is giving my speedo a signal to move?

I cannot find a pinout for 1986 gauges anywhere.

Are you sure your speed sensor at the transaxle is good?

It has to be, since my cruise control works, right? Also, my mpg gauge works.

Generally speaking your logic is sound but for the sake of confirming it disconnect the sensor at the transaxle and see if the cruise and mpg still work.

I think the MPG guage is a vaccum operated guage, not tied to the speed/odo system.

Bzzzzt! Wrong. All the 944 mpg gauges are driven by the ECU.

I pulled my speedometer apart to check the gears and found the odometer numbers wouldn't turn for some reason. Fiddled with it and then they started to spin freely. The gear that engages the worm gear and makes the odometer turn is intact, but I think the hi spots are mostly rounded off, due to the odometer having been jammed. Since reinstallation, the odometer does turn, but only occasionally. The speedometer still does nothing though. So, I am going to order a new gear and see where that gets me.
