Default Throttle Cable replacement S3, 5 speed

Hey guys, looking for some help here.
Current throttle cable, pedal to throttle linkage, is stretched out and tired.
Replacing today.
First question: on the pedal side of the firewall there is hardware and pin which holds the base of the cable thru an eyelet.
I'm not clear on how to get apart, the PET diagram is not clear and I could not find info in WSM yet. I can't get a mirror on it effectively, it feels like a hex head on one side...but I'm on my back and it's a blind grope. Any thoughts before I hamfist something?

Isn't the cable jacket adjustable at the firewall? I remember seeing something that looked like an adjustable collar there. You have something over it that looks like a rubber hose.

Thanks for the quick reply Imo, I can't really get any more tension at the adjuster on the fire wall -- unless I'm doing it wrong, which is always a small likelyhood.

This is the grommet end of the new part, just for those following:

I never replaced one, but there is an adjustment at the Firewall, it's a plastic threaded sleeve, looks like your last pic.

When removing an engine I always un-thread it so it doesn't get broken off at the FW.

Hmmm.
Just noticed the the part with the eyelet is a rubber puck.
One side of the pin is flared, maybe it just pops on? That would make sense, but I will wait for a sanity check prior to cutting or pulling the old one off

and thanks Dave.
If the seasoned guys like you and Imo haven't had to do it, that makes me think I have gone off the reservation again, lol.

Yeah, looking at your pic I'm thinking you remove it from the peddle lever, and push that entire part through the FW then detach from the bracket in front of the engine.
Assembly would be the same push it through from inside ?

The pin is flared on the end, so it just pushes though the cable eyelet. You are correct, the eyelet is a rubber type material so it will allow the flare to go through and then return to its original shape so it holds the pin in place. Just get a large screwdriver up there and pry the old pin out. This is what worked for me. The harder job is getting that grommet installed properly in the firewall.

If I remember correctly, you install the grommet first and then push the white plastic piece through it. Trying to install it all together is not possible.

From one of your pics, it does appear the cable is adjusted all the way in which would give excess slack. Of well, it is 30.5 years old. Just change it.

Crumpler ----- hook a brother up with a set of those super sweet air tubes!!! I love those.

I did this throttle cable replacement...I totally broke mine...mine broke up by the firewall...the biggest pain is actually taking the top of the engine down to reach it..folks are right it just kind of pops off....it's awkward underneath from inside but not overly difficult...I have small thin hands so for me it was probably not the challenge it may be for someone else.

there's a little bit of adjustment down by the linkage off the fan mount...so you don't have to worry so much about getting it absolutely perfect at the firewall..

I think end to end it was less than an hour for me..and was my first time also...more intimidating than anything else I think...every time I hear the word firewall I shy away inside...

Hey, thanks Mike, I forgot you just did this on the '85. How is it running?
I had the adjustment loose there thinking it was going to come out easily...

Thanks Noob, I will get on it and report back in, good to know.

...and yes, the tubes look sweet!!!! That was one of those mods that provoked either a "jesus christ, what did you do to your car" or a "those are completely awesome dude" response from the collective

I will go back and look at the materials we used, I might have extra prototypes or at least a source for the materials that I could get to you.

So with the sound advice, installation was very easy...and one less thirty year old component.
If I replace everything is my car new?

Hard to tell in the pic, but it is actually Carl's high output alternator. It's doing its job very well.
That is GB's fuel lines though.
...and Ken's chips.
... and eventually Sean's harness.
It's the 928 diversity program....

Test drive last night: better, tighter throttle response. I guess I expected that, but also a nice gradual decrease in RPM when I let off throttle. That was not something that I anticipated. Might be useful for those chasing ISV issues, or hunting idle speeds to try and tighten cables first?
