Default Washer Fluid Pump Repair

Hello !
One of the washer fluid pumps is located on the passenger side wheel well. This particular pump provides fluid to the windshield.

Mark the hoses and electrical connections, and remove the pump assembly.
Be careful to keep track of the rubber mounting studs which extend through the wheel well into the pump mounting bracket.
The assembly is held together with 4 small screws. Remove these, and the parts are ready for inspection.
The red and yellow rings are for orientation on re-assembly.

I jumped my electric motor with a 9 volt battery. It was lazy, but it did turn.
Using a generous amount of DeOxit, I soaked the assembly and set it aside for about an hour.

On inspection, the fluid pump assembly was frozen and nonfunctional. The rotating assembly was the culprit. I soaked this assembly in some really hot soapy water, and it still refused to budge.

I kept squirting small amounts of hot soapy water into the inlet fittings, and the pump began to break loose. I found that the rotating assembly fit perfectly in a 14mm socket. I hooked up some sections of hose and used my Makita driver to pump hot soapy water through the system.

Soon the pump was working like a champ. On reassembly, the DeOxit on the motor and the hot water on the pump assembly did the trick. Jumping the unit with the 9V battery now caused it to spin like new.

Hope this helps somebody.

Good stuff. Thanks for the narrative!

Was the chicken wing a celebratory meal, something that you found inside the pump, or a critical piece in the reassembly?

if you take the pump assembly apart you can clean everything with a toothbrush,
use DC 111 on the rubber pump housing seal and some on the shaft where it goes into the motor

Nice write-up, Dan. The root problem is probably rust from the steel insert inside the fill-port at the top of the tank, to reinforce the plastic where the fill hose clamps. Dig it out, clean the tank and replace it with a short piece of stainless tube-- IIRC 1" OD works perfectly.

P.S. I am sure that Porsche has a special tool for driving the pump for testing... your use of a common 14mm socket is not approved.

Dan the quality of the write up is stellar. Is this part of your probationary agreement?

I don't know where this pump lives on your car but the S3's have it tucked away in the engine bay...really problematic to get to, who the hell thought that was a good idea?

Also, and I say this with respect, I spent a day on fixing one of these little bastards and then found out they cost like 14 dollars...

Your can of Deoxit is worth more then that.

Regards from Crumplerville.

I have to go outside now, there is five months of dog poo in the backyard. I've been tasked to resolve that issue.

Yes. My probation stipulates "meaningful content : juvenile blabbering ratio not to exceed 3.14 : 5.56", so now I actually have to touch my car occasionally. Sheesh!

My pump is probably mounted in the same spot, but since I prefer the "No Engine Option" on my car, access is generous....

14 bucks. Oh man. Yep. That's what I'm talkin' about. These cars really are a bargain to restore !
