So I started my car yesterday and lowered the windows, and I noticed the passenger-side flag mirror was out of position. I fixed it (electrical stuff all works) but driving along, it kept moving around. When I stopped, I found it to be very loose on the support arm, or whatever you call it. Where you can normally fold it in, it just rotates easily. If I pull up on the mirror, I can lift it off of it's post, although the wires are still attached so you can't remove it all the way like that.

Clearly, something inside has broken. Is this a fixable thing, do you think? Or do I need a whole new mirror?

I have no idea what caused this. I never even fold them in...

There is a hollow spring loaded bolt holding the mirror to its base that has come loose. Fold the mirror in and find a single screw holding the mirror base to the door. Undo that, pull the whole thing up out of the door, and use a flat head screw driver of the right size to engage the splines inside the bolt to retighten it. Turn a little at a time to prevent damage to wiring. Use Loctite. See below photos.

Wrap a layer of insulation tape around the blade of the screwdriver, helps as a cushion against the wiring.

Hi Jeff, I had to do the same procedure for both mirrors. At first I thought I had to replace the hollow bolt since I could not push it in enough to grab the other portion and I thought it was stripped at the tip. It turns out that the spring is so strong that you have to push very hard to get it back into position to screw it in.
In my case I removed one of the washers on the spring so I was able to push it in to grab the other part. I used a big flat head screwdriver to push that hollow bolt into place. If you need I have some pictures that I can provide.

Parts are below. Not sure if I'll need to take off one of the washers, but suspecting I likely will for the reason mentioned by Andre.

Are those washers a complete circle? I can't tell if that's a seam in the picture, or if it's open. Actually, I didn't remove the whole bolt (disconnect wiring, et al) so I don't know, maybe they have to be open to fit around the bolt. In any case, I thought mine looked broken and removed it, and then the bolt did thread much easier.

So to conclude this thread, thanks everyone, pretty easy fix and I didn't have to buy anything. Win!

Yep. They are complete circles.

And one thing about the pics - the screw that I posted actually has nothing to do with the tension spring assembly. Had my parts confused, but the springs & two circular plastic washer are for the mirror rotation.
