Default Newbie "What is this" question.

Hello everyone, last spring I bought my first 928. I've removed the center console to replace the clock LCD screen and put in a new stereo head unit. A couple of things I have a question about, in the first photo I noticed the yellow vacuum line is connected but the orange line is capped. I assume it's supposed to be like that but what is it. In the second photo from the 2 lines I'm holding the one on the right is the antenna that was connected to the stereo but the line on the left was not connected to anything....what is it for?

The orange vacuum line is the comb flap if my memory serves me correctly. If there is no vacuum that thing closes and to get full a/c effect you have to find a way to jam the comb flap open or repair the actuator as you can do easily from that position.

The other connector looks like that used on a remotely mounted CD player or so I think.

Rgds

The original radio was replaced with an old pioneer CD unit. The pioneer head unit was hard wired in.

Should the orange line be connected to the unit directly above it?

probably wire for the original external amplifier next to the passenger seat under that carpeted hump....similar to where the hand brake is fitted on the drivers side.

The multi-pin DIN right-angle connector is to the factory amp, found under the "hump" outboard of the passenger's seat. The original speaker wires terminated there and connected to the amp, the PO may have removed all that and extended the speaker wires to the dash.

The other single-pin connector is the radio antenna, in the case of your '88 connects to the wire-in-glass windshield antenna via an amp behind the glovebox, high and outboard.

Yes. It should have a vacuum coupler similar to the yellow line, but the "bent" style (also used in the engine compartment for fuel dampers etc).

The PO replaced the original head unit and removed the original amplifier.
I just found: the orange line should connect to the unit above which is the Comb flap actuator. A black rubber tube that connects the orange line to the actuator is missing.

While you are in there, just go ahead and replace all those vac actuators unless you know they have been replaced recently. Getting to them is a hassle as you've seen, and now is the time. They have a thin rubber membrane inside that goes bad pretty often. Just do them now, and get that little vac elbow for the orange line too.

The orange line will be capped because the PO decided capping it was easier than replacing the rubber diaphragm which presumably leaks (its usually the first actuator to start leaking with age.. sometime around 15+ years from new).

So get a Mity Vac and see if the actuator holds vacuum before just connecting it back up - otherwise you'll likely find that your AC blows warm air.

Awesome.... thanks very much. The rubber coupler I was just going to go to the local auto parts store and get rubber vacuum lines. Since it's bent should I buy it OEM? I have a vacuum pump I'll test the comb flap actuator.
