Default PVGP 2017 - 40th Celebration of the Euro COTY July 14 - 16

Edit - Registration Link: http://arpca.com/pvgp/2017-pvgp/

Time to register now! Porsches only though.

Each summer on the lawn at the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix, in our patch where the Porsches gather (200+ strong), we have a special exhibit featuring a Porsche model. Two summers ago, we brought in the Janis Joplin car from the Rock and Roll HoF for display, plus some other special race bred Porsches. Last year, we featured a rare 1993 peru red RS America, and the winner of our Peoples Choice award went to a 1957 Speedster GS/GT 4 cam car (an exceedingly rare seven figure car).

While we have featured many different Porsche models over the years on the lawn at Schenley Park in the heart of the City of Pittsburgh, the 928 has never been one of them - until now!

Forty years ago, in 1977, at the Geneva Auto Salon, the Porsche 928 debuted for the first time. It went on sale as a 1978 model, and was the first (and so far the only) sports car to be awarded the European Car of the Year.

In honor of the 40th anniversary of the 1977 Geneva show and the first public introduction of the 928, this year's feature car for the Allegheny Region PCA PVGP car show will be the 928. All model years are welcome, and there will be an emphasis on the early cars. In this regard, we hope to get both #1 and #6 on the lawn for special display. As most of you know, these two are preproduction press cars, from 1977. They are both well documented here on Rennlist, and owned by our fellow RLister, Jim Doerr (Jadz928). We need to figure out logistics, but I would view this as being as significant (to me at least) as getting the Joplin car here two years ago.

In addition, we are hoping to get Tony here with Mokka, and Alex with a bevy of cars, plus Andrew, Ross, Eric (Eman), Brian, Hacker and everyone else with an early shark for a special display. It would be great if we could have a generational display also, with an early car, an S , an 86.5 S, an S4, a GT, and a GTS. With Rick, Otto, Glenn, Nate, Steve and a few others, we have most of the line-up already on the way. Plus what a coupe it would be if we could get a Weissach or two, and (calling Roger) a genuine Club Sport! (note, Derrick Bell's special production Club sport just sold at auction for over $280K!). Also, how cool would it be to see Blumaxx paired with William's Minerva from Cali? One can only dream.

As to the event itself, the PVGP is a world class car event. It has been well followed by some of the major sports car magazines (Hemmings, Sports Car Digest, and Autoweek, to name a few). The PVGP takes place in scenic Schenley Park in the heart of Pittsburgh. It is one of 2 vintage races that occur on public streets in the world, the other being Monaco. Racers come from all over the world to participate. It is also a significant charity fundraiser – proceeds are donated through the PVGP to the Autism Society of Pittsburgh and the Allegheny Valley School.

The highlights of the weekend activities from our standpoint include:

Friday, July 14:

• Weekend kick-off at the Double Wide restaurant in Cranberry Township PA – our local Club (ARPCA) hosts the out of town clubs and Porsche drivers travelling to participate in the PVGP. The venue is right next to the hotels and turnpike just North of the City. It includes a nice impromptu gathering of Porsches of all varieties. All local and distant sharks welcome. Starts at 5 pm to ?

Saturday, July 15:

• International Car Show on the Golf Course – over 2500 cars on display
• ARPCA Catered Tailgate Party (starts at 12:00 Noon - open to all participants who register through the ARPCA website and msr)
• Top 10 Peoples’ Choice Concours - open to all Porsches registered on the lawn - let's have a shark win this year!
• Vintage Racing Time Trails (there are many classic and vintage Porsches and other great marques participating in the races throughout Schenley Park on the roadway - a 2.3 mile course.)

Sunday, July 16:

• Porsche Car Show day 2. Usually a lighter turnout, but still well over 100 Porsches on the lawn in our area.
• ARPCA Catered Picnic (starts at 12:00 Noon - open to all participants who register through the ARPCA website and msr)
• Vintage Car Races.

In addition, there are many other events taking place in the week and a half up to race weekend, including the big bore historic races at Pitt Race on the weekend before, and the Walnut Street Invitational Car Show, among many other car events.

So folks, get your calendars out and start planning. I will update this thread as registration opens and we secure a block of rooms at the hotel.

Can't wait to see what we can gather!

I'll be there! Moved to Seattle from Pittsburgh 17 years ago and have only ever gone back and forth by plane. The drive in the 928 will be the first time I have ever driven across the the US. Can't think of a better car for my first time. Looking forward to meeting those of you who I've only corresponded with here on the List and especially getting to see all the variety of 928s!

I know that I've said this before (or so) but...

I'd really love to be there...

And this year would be the perfect time...

If it works with the job, I'll be there...

Will see...

Sorry Ed, I'm out.
The date is too close to the July Vintage event at Road America.

On top of that, no way my 78 would be ready anyway.

Thanks for the sticky Hacker, and too bad about the car. I followed the other thread.

Dammit Ed... I'm a Doctor, not a Magician... I can't be in two places at once! Sorry, but it's the same weekend the 928 Buckeye Landsharks are hosting the Porsche Corral at the Arthritis Foundation Classic Auto Show here in Columbus... Sounds like a really good time and wish I could be there, but Mike Buccicone needs me and my 84 Euro for this event. Were basically doing the same type of show with the 928 as a featured marque. Wish it were on a different weekend because I WOULD BE THERE! Hope you guys have a great turn out and a wonderful time!!

I know Joel, me too. Unfortunately, the PVGP is much bigger than our show, or I would move it. It is a huge event, with a significant car show and races. Hemmings has it listed in the calendar of significant shows for the upcoming year (they are there every year, and I am working on having them do a special shoot of some of our rarer cars). Anyway, there will be thousands of cars, plus the vintage races. You can come over on Sunday? Would love to have you.

Ed, if I can make it, what would be the preferred car to bring...Turq or Dennis's Weissach?
