Default 1978 OB buying advice

For those following along, I sold my '85 with the hopes of finding an OB. I finally found one in my price range that may not be a basket case. I need to get a better idea of values and what to look for on a CIS car. Details below.

1978 Green on green. 140,000 miles and no title. Its being sold in New Hampshire which apparently doesn't require titles for classic cars. The seller says he can get one, it just takes up to 4 weeks.... seems like a red flag but there ya go.

Don't have the vin yet but Ill post that when i can. Ive asked him the questions I know based off of my 85 ownership but welcome any advice for an older car.

It is being sold by the guy's neighbor because the owner doesn't own a computer... Apparently it has had a repaint recently and the timing belt has been done. Runs and drives. Obviously the dash needs to be recovered. They are asking 7900 but the guy has offered 7450. I was thinking more like 6000.

Im pretty far from the car so the pictures were taken by the neighbor. Ive asked for more and will update.

Thanks for any thoughts/opinions/criticisms!

IIRC spotted that same car for sale the last year or so. CT also does not require title for vehicles 20+ years old: http://www.ct.gov/dmv/cwp/view.asp?a=816&q=244692 I'd try and get some eyes on that 928 above before proceeding. IIRC NH salts there roads and this car might not fare well if driven winters. Appears it will need much deferred maint, cosmetics, etc. If you like Oak Green, you just might save some $$ making and make an offer here: https://www.hemmings.com/classifieds...8/1876094.html it should at least hold it's value or even increase over time.02 T

The look of the instrument cluster (and headlights & back bumper panel) suggests it's a Euro.... thus only having 90K+ miles on it.....

Not really in the realm of reality for me unfortunately. It may cost less in the long run but I cant justify 30 grand for a toy car at the moment. That being said, the extra pics being sent will tell me more. Might not be worth it at any price.

Shouldn't there be side markers after the front tires?

As in?

Do you mean pushed in or they look like they are mounted lower somehow?

The bumperettes on a 78 are not as beefy as later models, they are the same width, but the thickness is less, by about an inch (measuring from back to front).

It's a Euro, bumperettes were added, so wouldn't put much stock in that. Are you sure it's a '78? Dash & console scream '79 to me - not sure that the leather dash with plastic vents came until somewhere mid '79 when Porsche figured out they could use up the flawed dashes by covering in leather AND charge the customer to do so. If '78 dash and console with stitching was likely already replaced at some point. VIN would help, make sure he gives you VIN off manufacturer's tag under hood from the front of car, not from paperwork as some states 're-VIN' the car when imported (my NH euro 'VIN' on the title is 'NH6532' or something like that - with a door tag to match), but the front tag is still original factory euro tag.

Car looks savable. Not sure it's a 6k car. It IS if the car runs well & has no synchro issues, and paint is decent - but it looks like they painted over bumper beading so likely not a great job. Interior looks like a total re-do. (8-12k). Paint is 8k if you do the disassembly/assembly work, synchro is 4k for rebuild if you pull tranny, A/C is 2-4k depending, radio is a 1-2k find, etc/ etc.

Perhaps it a trick of the lighting or I am mistaken, but they look to be lower in the bumper and not flush with the top in this picture....ok, so I just went to post the picture and realized it is just the reflection of the bumperetts on the back of the car....nevermind.

Looks like a 79 to me for multiple reasons, some of which VanD pointed out. A/C vents in doors, console are 79 style. Stitched dash etc. Door locks later style, Air intake tubes later style, Radiator markings etc.

However, it certainly looks like it was hit in the rear. The bumperettes are misaligned, and the rear cover looks to be pushed in.
