british-cars@autox.team.net Subject: A sad reminder of our mortality From: "Daren Stone, D2 Mfg. Engr. C5/6, 5-9521" <DSTONE@SC9.intel.com> Date: Wed, 23 Jun 93 11:59:49 PDT This morning several of us were called into our manager's office as he had something he wanted to talk to us about. This has often happened in the past as we shifted charters, or took on new projects, but I could tell today was different from the look on my manager's face. He painfully unfolded a story of a tragedy that occurred last night, which not only involved us directly and Intel as a whole, but oddly enough LBCs, and that's why I'm passing this along, in the hopes that it might make a difference to someone out there. Last night in Pleasanton, California, an accident occurred where a replica 427 Cobra left the road at speed, overturned into a ditch and burst into flames. The driver of the car is in the hospital with serious burns and is not expected to be released for at least 6wks. The passenger of the car was fatally injured. The significance of this is that I worked with both of these people, the owner of the Cobra sitting close enough to me that I can stand up and see a picture of the car on his cube wall. I saw them both last night as we all worked late. Me, I left to go home & work on my LBC, my co-workers left to drive theirs. It made me wonder how many times I have let my LBC sing her song loud without a care in the world, and how close I could've been to a tragedy without even thinking about it. I'm sure they weren't thinking about it. This is dedicated to the memory of Bob DeVore. we'll miss you- Daren Stone

Race Rules
Is anybody here real familiar with PCA or POC race rules? I looked in the guides for both but did not see the question addressed as to exhaust pipe exits. Some sanctioning bodies specify the exhaust must exit behind the rear wheels.
I see no such rules in PCA / POC, but would appreciate any advice from race experts in SoCal.
This is for aero purposes, to determine where we need to put stuff on the underbody.
Thanks!

Run a single 3 inch pipe out the back tucked up in the normal space. You will want to do Laguna Seca with POC and you will need a muffler to meet the decibel limits. Plus side exhaust is vulnerable to getting crushed WHEN you go off track (not if ) and can limit ground clearance trailer ramp clearance..

I have heard this before. Real tough to get a proper diffuser with a back exhaust, but I'll give it a try.
I am guessing pro race teams have them because they can simply replace it every event, right???

Porque no?
No really, I got ground clearance and noise from Jim. Good reasons, real good reasons. What else are the reasons preventing this from working???

The passenger side will point directly at the sound booth when you're hammering up the hill at Laguna Seca.

Currently in my driveway.... note how the exhaust residue collects on the paint. The muffler and pipes live where the rear seat used to be. with a fully tube frame car (like most professional race cars) you put the floors and bulkheads where you want.

I have designed one for my racer, but we have not put it in. The benefits for us are weight savings, and keeping the trans cooler (by not sandwiching it between hot exhaust pipes).
To get the pipes up, i figured to cut the floor where the passenger seat used to be, and build a tunnel for them. We will be exiting both L and R out the same side - the right side. Most of our tracks are CW, and if we exit the exhaust out the passenger side, it will help us pass Db tests as the monitors tend to always be on the outside of the circuit.
Both of our pipes will be coming out through the rocker panel, that's why in this picture the sponsor's stickers are already removed from that area. I will wrap the fiberglass with some nice SS to protect them from the heat. I am using oval exhaust tubing where the left side exhaust has to pass under the torque tube.
