Umm I think you should check your work
The stub shaft should be pre fitted before installing the clutch
also fit the guide tube put the stubshaft all the way into the pilot bearing ,
Then pull it back about 3 to 4 MM,
this will center the stub bearing surface into the pilot bearing.
Mark the shaft position at the back side of the guide tube.
Then remove the guide tube and shaft now fit the clutch assembly .
the marks will center the stub shaft .

This will prevent the stub shaft from bottoming out into the pilot bearing .

NOTE this step not being followed could possibly damage the pilot bearing and or PRELOAD THE CRANK FORWARD

Thumbs up The Beast is ALIVE FINALLY!!!

I am happy to report the car (my 86 early) was put on public highways for the first time in almost 3 years yesterday and is running FANTASTIC. Only thing not quite right was the shifting. I started a new post on this problem. Last Monday it easily passed CA emissions. This is the first time it EVER easily passed. I will begin a string on the converter cleaning process (off the car) that I did that may have helped.

I’d like to thanks all on the board and especially Rodger, Greg and Rick for their help and support

Mr Merlin. Thank for you post on position of the intermediate shaft. Sure would be nice if that was noted in the WSM! When I installed the intermediate shaft, I did push the shaft in until it bottomed, then pulled it back circa a mm or so, but w/o marks as you suggested. Also, would think the groves in the TT / intermediate shaft for the coupler would provide a consistent for / aft location?

The cars clutch is perfect. Bleeding it was so much easier with the Greg Brown hose and your bleed process. I adjusted the intermediate plat by using a set of feeler gauges with the clutch disengaged and obtaining the same distances from the disks to the intermediate plate. I adjusted the distance from the disks to the plate to circa .6 mm each. This is in my mind’s eye equivalent to the old Devek recommendation to set the plate equidistance between the flywheel and pressure plate. No flames please, the clutch and shifting is perfect.
