Default ROW 88 wont run..

As above, recent full service -belt, pump, tranny several 1000kms ago, suddenly stopped. Flat bedded home. No pump relay firing when cranked. Pump runs when jumpered. Started once, very low , rough running for 20-30 secs, dies, wont start again. With ignition on there is rapid clicking on the engine, which can be felt through injector rail cover.
The fact that it run tells me its not crank sensor or ignition. Pump is audible when jumpered.
Any suggestions please?

get the LH computer rebuilt, the clue is the clicking injectors with the key on,
Also a good time to do an intake refresh

Stan,
Thanks - that was my diagnosis as well, but I didnt raise it as I didnt want colour reponses. John Speake has a local agent who has stock, just needs a part no to verify - Pet says it should be 928.618.123.13 - sound right ? I believe the clicking is injectors firing continuously, and flooding it - the way it died could have been either too lean for its temp (< 20C currently), but also could have been choking rich ....?

The injectors have recently been cleaned.

John - the failure is on the tile within the ECU. The tile also drives the O2 circuit, so running rich or lean are a common precursor symptom to total failure when the injectors just click continuously in the on position.

I spent months trying to get my 87 through an emissions test post-import with wildly variable results, before the ECU just failed completely with the clicking state (coincidentally it failed inside the emissions centre, after it actually got a technical pass on the emissions.. I had to push it out, but at least it passed )

Hilton,
Assume you fixed it by plugging in a new LH box ? Fortunately with my CIS car I didnt have to do any emission testing, just get it inspected for lap/sah belts and intrusion bars in the doors.

Yep - JDS rebuild in that car running just fine for the last few years since

I actually had a spare LH on the shelf at home - I just hadn't connected the wildly variable emissions results with impending failure. After pushing it out of the emissions centre when the injectors started clicking, I called my wife who drove down to Botany with my spare LH and I drove the car home

Excellent , just what I wanted to hear. The owner is a recent buyer, and not totally confident with this sort of diagnosis and fix, but will be happy to avoid more mechanic bills.

There may be other issues with the car - but the injectors clicking continuously with the ignition in the On position is specifically a sympton of LH failure.

Hilton,
Understand that there may be other problems, but it was sweet as a nut before this, and all maintenance recently brought up to date, so we hope a refurb LH from Matt will at least get it mobile again.

thanks

Replacement fitted, and its running. Not well though - should it take some driving for it to learn something after a hard reset like this ? Stationery its difficult to get revs past 2k. Imply something else is amiss ?

tks

JP,

If motor is equipped with cats then it will undergo adaption until it settles completely. I doubt that would explain the symptom you describe though - maybe someone will have a different opinion.

disconnect the battery , then connect and go for a drive.
with a good LH it will drive like shmutz if the battery has not been disconnected for a while.

As soon as owner took it for a drive next morning it came good! Maybe idle isnt completely settled, but its 99% right.

Good to hear.

Sounds like the MAF is pretty old - LH2.3 adapts to compensate for MAF signal changes due to age on cars with an O2 loop.

Owner should probably factor in a MAF replacement in their budget for 2017.
