Windshield wipers stopping in place

Mine do similar on the 87 S4, they stop about 8 inches above normal resting position, however a quick tap up on the wiper stalk and they "park" in the normal resting place. Not sure why but they do.

There's a "Park Circuit" in the motor/trans unit that has power going to it all the time, so that after you turn the switch off, it keeps going to the "park" position.
I'm going to guess that either one of the contact 'fingers' is bad, or you have a broken wire somewhere.
4th pic in this thread shows the contact wheel on the main gear and fingers (on the opened lid). The thread is about replacing the bearing, but that pic shows the contact wheel (the big gap from about 1 to 3 O'clock is the "park position").

I do have the multiple speeds, but I have to time the blade to have them stop in the down position. There would be a video but my phone uses the MP4 video format.

No not the multiple speeds - intermittent mode. Down on the stalk gets you a variable delay intermittent wipe - that is implemented with a special relay - do you have the relay installed - if you don't have one you will never get parking. If you have an '89 its should be in position VII, if you have a '90-'95 is should be in Position XI.
