Default fuel filler insert: what is this supposed to do?

Hi!
Filled my 928 with some liter of petrol today , when I removed petrol gan at gas station this filler insert was stuck on the petrol gun, it came out for the very forst time.

As per title: function? Can I live without it?

A new one costs 180 dollars or so: is it made of plutonium? how to put back in place(it seems it cannot stay where it was for 24 years)?

Thank you so much!

in the USA it prevented people from using the larger diameter hose end used for leaded gasoline. This kept the catalytic convertor from being " accidentally " poisoned. The unleaded fuel nozzle being smaller.

They just slide in and a little tab digs into the plastic a bit to hold it in.

When I converted two of my cars to the non-catalytic version, I removed the filler inserts.

Ake, if you removed them do you still have them?
I can use them they are needed for our emission inspections ,
as this part must be in place to pass inspection in USA PA.

Wow, I've never heard of that being part of an emissions inspection. PA seems unusually strict.

Cali squealed about a not-quite readable "unleaded fuel only" sticker on the glass too. Thank goodness the one on the cluster was still intact.

I kinda miss those bi-annual Cali inspections.

I've never had any trouble here in California. I don't have the stickers or the insert. Maybe I should in case I get a tech that actually knows what they are looking at

They often got so confused looking at the gas cap which they have no adapter for the required vacuum test that they never look for the insert..

Sounds about right. They seem to have a face that says "yep, the gas cap is there" and move on.

Mr. Merlin, I have gone through my inventory of used parts and I am sorry to say I cannot find any filler inserts. It was very many years ago I did the conversion and probably the inserts got damaged when being removed so I throwed it away.
