Default Single disk clutch disk better than 2?

The later 5sp cars had single clutch disk. My '80 was converted using an S4 flywheel. I have no idea what the clutch is like in my red car and now wondering if I should switch to a single using the parts from my 85 parts car.

Van, the '85 (and the red car) should be twin disk, the single started in '87. Lots of folks have swapped both ways, so you will have to look. The twin has a lighter pedal, longer travel, holds more torque and can be fiddly to adjust.

The 85 parts car has an S4 motor so I assume that it has a single disk. The clutch in my 86 is very light. Just curious why the change was made. I had assumed it was easier for the dealers to service and of course there were fewer and fewer manual's.

They could have kept the dual disk if it was working in your parts car. Only way to find out is to drop the lower bell housing and have a look.

i used and swapped out the single disc to a dual disc because it holds more torque AND is 20lbs lighter and thats rotating mass, so its effect is very noticeable when quick reving the car.... and a possibly in 1st gear where acceleration rates are high and it has more of an effect.

Can one put the dual disc in an early '78 US car? is it recommended?
