Disconnect the bags and pull the dash bulb! If you are still worried about the explosive pack in the back of the airbags, remove the packs. Then make sure you tell the next owner what you did.

I've been in this EXACT same situation with my '91, with my warning light being sporadic with coming on. Keep thinking its gone away or has been due to a battery drain discharging the system to cause the fault light(just replaced the battery), but I fear worse, as in a problem with the Airbag Controller. I was about to post a thread last month asking if anyone had the contact info for the shop in TX that checks & repairs the Airbag ECU. So Thanks John for providing that info on Air Bag Systems.

Hey Trey, can you tell me what it cost you for the earlier AB Controller with the sensors? And where you got it? If you end up disabling yours and not needing the controller you have, I may be interested. Since we both live here in Jax, maybe we should have an Airbag ECU/Sensor replacement party!
Very interested also. I have an intermittent warning/alarm on mine.

Tray, mine (1991) is hard wired also.

I have a 1991 that was exhibiting the same hit a bump and the air bag warning would light up when I first purchased about a year ago. I disconnected the sensors on each side of the car and sprayed them down and cleaned with Deoxit and I have not seen the warning anymore now for about 6 months. I just hope it stays that way. I am keeping an eye on this thread just in case of a re-occurrence.

Well, shoot. I was hoping this was a 1990 only issue.

Mel and Bertrand -

the only way to resolve a failed controller is to replace the controller and all underdash wiring with a working used or rebuilt unit.

That is why I'm leaning towards disabling

I bought mine from LA Dismantlers on EBAY within the last couple of years. I think I paid $200-300 for the unit.

What for? if you want to disable it you now know how - right? The connector for it - T52 is in the console.

Unplug the airbag controller & link pins 3 & 4 (do it properly with a spare plug) on the car side (NB the female terminals are on the car side).

Tracy:

I did both witout luck. I'll redo them.
I also removed and cleaned the #3 connector at the pod, main connector to the controler and the steering air bar. I also checked the clock spring.

If nothing works, I'm thinking of disabling the whole system. Thanks Alan, that's the information I needed.

I know of course that it is not the right way to fix this, but also at the same time I'm not even sure the system still works properly.

But I'll give a try again at cleaning everything again.
We'll see...

Alan -

I was under the impression you only just discovered this to be the likely bypass but no one has tried it yet.

If it has been tried, does it shut off the bulb in the dash and the digital display message, too?

Thanks!

I'm not in the habit of wildly guessing what the right answer might be...

But have I tried it? - no. My airbag works (I think... ) Do I recommend you do it? - hell no - that is your decision.
Do I think it is likely to work as advertized - yes.
