G'day from Western Australia
Hi Folks,
Newby to this forum. I'm a Jeep guy with a few mid-80s CJs and a wagon. My neighbour recently offered me his '88 928 S4 for what I think was a pretty good price and the wife called me the other day to tell me he'd told her I could have it for 2 grand less than his original price! Bang I was there in a heartbeat and now I'm the proud owner of a silver 77,000 km Porsche that's nearly 30 years old. I'm calling it good.
The way I see it even if I have to pull the trans or rebuild the engine I can't lose. These are listed in car selling websites here for 28 to 80k so being well south of 28k I'm starting in pretty good shape (hopefully).
So what do I have? Lots of snails. It was parked on the long grass for a very long time and according to a worksheet/invoice in the glove box it has done only 1000ks in the last 5 years. I gave is a good blast with the Gerney and now the snails have started to migrate up the sides in droves.
It is pretty wet inside too maybe from my washing but I'll need to check into windscreen seals etc. Door seals look and feel great.
Carpets are good, seats are beige and are OK too with no tears and very little in the way of wear.
I have a noisy and shunty transmission though. I have topped up what was a very low bottle and expected miracles but not so much. It is still bad. Hopefully the PO hasn't trashed it by running it low on oil.
I need to get it down to the Jeep Oasis (my factory shop) where I can get it up on level ground on stands so I can git under it and get it all checked out. Problem with that is I have a blown heater hose so until I get that done it isn't going anywhere. Can I just put a standard 3/4" hose on that thing? Hopefully I can get away with that for temporary.
Anyway I know forums are great places for information and for sharing ideas/thoughts so I look forward to my 928 journey here with you guys (and girls I presume).
Gary.

Welcome, you will enjoy the Shark once its sorted out, Trans noise could be Torque Tube related or Torque Converter bearing, the transmissions are quite strong, is this manual or Stick.
Never had a Snail issue, I'd imagine they could be a real pest in mass.
Good luck w/ your new ride

Welcome and congratulations on your purchase!
I have spent a bunch of time in Melbourne and the Snowy Mtn's! In fact I'll be back in Melbourne for a few weeks in Oct/Nov, but that's too far for me to come and take a look at your project.
Are you in Perth? If so, you should contact the local Porsche club and the shop that previously serviced the car. A wealth of information will come to you in the form of its history and maintenance (get records from previous owner as well). If you can not do the work, or do not have the specialized tools that it takes to work on this car, find and become friends with someone who does!
Sitting 928's have a multitude of bugs to work out before hitting the road again. FIRST check the fuel lines!!! They dry out and leak in close proximity to the distributor caps! FIRE is a real threat! If you have a rotted heater hose, chances are that you have rotted fuel lines and a bunch of other issues and will want to undertake a major replacement campaign. Pulling the motor is pretty handy for getting at all the hoses, seals and belts you will need to change out.
It sounds like you have the enthusiasm to take it on, so call Roger and have him send you some "care packages" for your new beastie!

G'day Mate,
Welcome!!! Everything you need to know is available here!!! I am a "newbie" too, read the "new visitor" sticky, (you may have already), use the search function also, however, don't be afraid to ask the questions, that way we can all be "refreshed".
Awesome people here mate that can sort anything with these cars.
Pictures are vital when you can.
Oh and I promise I won't mention the Rugby...

Welcome Gary! You'll have to work on getting some photos posted, so we can get a better idea of what you have, and give you some tips on what you should give priority.
It would be worth giving Roger (post above) a call to introduce yourself. You'll find his prices are very competitive, and he knows how to ship economically and quickly to us here in Oz ... generally better than any price here, even with shipping.

Welcome from up-over! You've got your work cut out for you now! heheheheee.
First things first, your car is a interference engine, and if you start it after sitting so long, you can do expensive damage to the valves. Maybe you already know this, but good to put it up front.
Read up on the sticky threads at the top, they will answer about 70% of your questions. Get to know Roger(ROG100) a few posts above. He'll be your best buddy for the next few months.
Post a few more times so you can add pics, and lets see it.

Hi Gary
Welcome to the 928 world.
As above email Roger for parts from the US. Parts in WA from the dealer are a bit expensive. Roger is ex UK and understands what RHD means.
Read the new visitors guide, check the timing belt and fuel lines before you start or plan driving any distance.
I would drain every known fluid in the car and replace all filters if you have no records.
If you are desperate I may have spare oil, air, fuel, auto filter and seal if you want to borrow and replace. My car is on stands and not going anywhere in the next two months. I live north of the river but work south. You can pm me.
Regards
Norm

Thanks for the welcome folks and offering assistance. Very nice. I'll heed the advice and get the bloods out as soon as I can get it to my shop which is only 3 minutes away. I'll also get in touch as I start wading in. It sure is a teeny weeny car with lots of tight spaces that I'm not used to. This afternoon I'll get that heater hose changed out I reckon. I've also brought some stands home so I can get it up level and set that transmission fluid right for that short drive.
Edit: three hours later.....fixed burst hose by shortening a little and reattaching. Ok for now. But the overheating thing continues. So here's what I've found:
1. Both fans aren't working
2. Suspect the water pump isn't pumping.
3. After a very short lap around the block I'm rather keen to see what this thing can do 😳
With help from a thread on this forum I found that if I short sockets 1 and 5 then 4 and 8 on the finned gizmo I can force the fans (left one anyway I think the right side fan is US, very stiff compared with the other). This tells me I have power getting to that plug and that the gizmo is prolly no good, correct?
Well even with 1 fan I still have too much heat. The port on the block that returns from the rad is too hot to touch yet the return hose is literally cool, not even warm really. The hose TO the rad is pretty hot, dare I say it but I'm calling that steam. Heater hose also very hot. So I'm asking you learned folks what the likelihood my pump isn't pumping? Do we have a known issue with that?
And the transmission shifts like it came out of a Massey Ferguson tractor.
