Our good friend John showed us some great hospitality including sleeping accommodations, improvised red neck explosives, a garage to work in and local flavor. Last minute wrinkles ironed out and a close call with local jet fuel served in mason jars the night before, we left early for Lexington airport to pick up the better halves. The outer most edges of hurricane Mathew made for some heavy rain driving, something Californians don’t see much of. Here’s the route we took, and the stop at Joes Drive-in Chicken paid off with some dam good fried bird.
Then on to Lexington Airport to collect the wives.
A fellow Rennlister name Patrick, user name Pjmeyer, contacted me via this site to ask if he could photo the cars for a blurb in the Blue Grass Region PCA newsletter. He and his fellow PCA member Ray the club photographer were great to meet and talk cars with in Versailles KY. When he posts the article I’ll try to put up a link. Patrick's S4:
Next couple days were passed hitting bourbon distillers, the local horse races and being blown away by the over the top friendly locals.
From there on to cabins at the Dancing Bear Lodge in Townsend, TN and Tail of the Dragon. We ran the dragon with minimal traffic on a Wednesday morning. Our friend John from Greensboro hooked back up with us in a BMW 330 ZHP, which sticks to corners like glue. I know the tight twisties aren’t the 928’s forte but it was fun as hell driving nearly flat out for 20+ minutes. The front fairing scraped on at least 5 banked turns, the wife was a trooper and I learned my GTS doesn’t have a rev limiter. The Dragon was followed by the Charohala Skyway which had awesome fall colors. Kevin, John and I woke early the next morning to shoot the Dragon one more time just after sunrise Thursday, what a drive!
