Default Door speaker replacement odyssey

Since I have come up empty locating recone kits for the stock speakers I went on a search for replacements. Both are 4ohm and I believe are shallow enough to fit without a spacer or major surgery.

So far the two finalists are:

CL-42SL - CDT Audio 4" 110W RMS 2-Way Component Speakers System

Frequency response 100Hz-20.000Hz
Power handling (110Watt) | RMS HPF-120Hz
Impedance 4 Ohm
Mounting depth: 1.25"

and

MOREL VIRTUS MW4 CAR AUDIO 4" MID WOOFERS & GRILLS NEW

Power Handling:
Peak: 600 watts per pair / 300 watts each woofer
RMS: 200 watts per pair / 100 watts each woofer
Impedance: 4 Ohm
Sensitivity: 87 dB
Frequency Response: 70-4500Hz
Double Ferrite Rear Vented Magnet System
Composite Cellular Fiber Cone Material
Aluminum Voice Coil Type/Former
Hexatech Aluminum Voice Coil Wire
Mounting Depth: 2.1"
Mounting Cutout: 3.74

Opinions?

Do they actually fit in the doors? The CRITICAL dimension is going to be depth. Some folks have hammer-massaged (!!!) the inner door metal trying to get misfit speakers to "fit". Or holesawed (!!!) the metal to let the magnet structure poke through.

I would keep looking for re-cone and suspension pieces for the ones you have that fit. Next would be suitable replacements that fit without metalwork, and have the original grills fitted. Next but way down my options list would be same but with the replacement grills instead of original. I don't thing any of the metal-mod options would make it anywhere near my car.

---

I re-coned and re-suspension'd the stock speakers in the doors and the rear area, but replaced the b-post "woofers" (even "mid-bass" would be generous really...) with some Infinity components grafted into the original frames with original grills. Knowing what I know now, I would probably re-cone those too.

Depth per the specs are 1.25 and 2.1 inches. The latter may fit because the magnet diameter might fit in the depression in the door.

I have scoured the internet and all the replies say no cones available.

So, I will replace the head unit, amp and all the speakers.

I have those exact CDT units in my 81 and like them. I only had to use a spacer because my door doesn't have the 84+ indents.

They barely go past the spacer and are truly thin. Any later 928 will have no problems using them. They sound decent too.

The only issue with them is that the speaker holes do not line up with the 928's stock holes.

So an adapter plate must be made. But with the events in the 3D printed ring thread this shouldn't be an issue.

I went with Focal 100KRS. Woofer fits perfectly with no mods, I mounted the tweeter using the supplied basket after using a dremel to cut out just enough from the stock tweeter housing for a tight interference fit and used the stock grill. I managed to pick the set up barely used for $300 on DIYMobile classifieds.

Sound great even though I'm still only using head unit amplification, eventually I plan to run them in active crossover mode along with a Sharkwoofer.

If you use currently available speakers, be sure and match the speaker RMS outputs with your head unit/power amp RMS output. The actual power matching calculation is a bit more involved. The point is that matching commonly available 100 watt speakers with 18 watt head unit output produces suboptimal audio

Using head unit power amps in general results in suboptimal audio. I'd personally plan around that amp upgrade now.

Already on it. This is one fellow 928 owners have in the original amp location.

I have that amp installed in the 87 S4 and it fit very nicely in the original space.

Awesome thread along with the speaker ring one going on too.

Since the Hans speaker project has been put out to pasture, it would be great if we can keep a database or known list of what works without hacking up the car.

All the original speakers in my 87 work and actually sound great, but I would like to remove them all to mothballed storage and replace with something new.

Ok... Are there any heat dissipation issues in that amp storage area? 300W is a lot of power. I bought a mini power amp for a small subwoofer and I'll be using a heat sink for that little amp.

I would ask Jetson above. :-)
