Default Is there a preferred piston ring?

Is there a preferred piston ring to use? Tried the search button and some mention using Total Seal and some use the 951 rings with the chrome top ring. Refreshing the 89GT engine that hasn't run since 95. Only has 50K on it but feel it best to replace the rings while everything is apart.

It's hard to beat the piston rings used by the factory, which are manufactured by Goetze.

Hi,
Just for the sake of knowledge....
Are there any significant differences between the 951 rings and the original 928 rings?

Thanks ! ! !

The factory 928 rings have a cast upper ring. If you spread it too far, it will snap.

The 951 factory upper ring is not cast...you can spread it and it just bends.

I assume they did this because of the increased cylinder pressure of the 951 combined with the potential for detonation, which can be tough on the top ring.

I've never tried to break a new Goetze 951 top ring to see if the replacement rings are the same as factory rings....

Replace them with stock Rreplacment Goetze. one of the reasons is not the milelage, but the TIME. they are probably just find , but engines with low compression have rings that look fine too.
its a wyit type of thing in my book. Then you really have a new engine

I remember a while back buying a set of Deves piston rings for a 944 build. Although this is semi-OT,there is no comparison of any aftermarket ring set to the original ones put out by Goetze.

A little 101 education for anyone rebuilding any type of watercooled Porsche engine.

yes... re-ring with porsche replacement rings and you will be very happy.... however, let the shop install the rings unless you have done it before. (they can break, unless you use the experienced technique)

Yea I figured that out the hard way. That is also how I found out to ditch the Deves and go back to Goetze.

My curiosity was piqued after looking at the Lindsay Racing (944) website. They list several of their own ringsets, one with a chrome top ring and their super deluxe set that includes both a chrome top and second ring. They aren't cheap and I was curious if the chrome ring was an "improvement" over our cast rings.

you never know.... there was one need for chrome ring, with my nicasil block. (oil control ring that the wisconson boys figured out after destroying a few engines)
i dont know of the details of how a chrome ring works with a alusil block, but why stray from what works.... stay stock and you wont have to report back that your engine grenaded do to this ring change. it maybe better, but i think only doc brown or a couple others could validate its use in a 928 engine.
