Question Need Help Identifying Missing Intake Manifold Sensor and Cut-Off Wire

Hello everyone,

I recently bought my first Porsche, which is a 1986 928S Manual. The car didn't start, but I was confident that if I put in enough time and effort, I could get the car up and running.

Lo and behold, I got the car to start! It makes one hell of a sound, like a large freight truck passing you by on a highway. I'm really happy that I bought this car.

However, I have one problem that I was not able to solve after looking through the Porsche manuals and catalogs as well as Rennlist: there appears to be a missing sensor near the back of the air intake manifold and a cut-off wire right next to the missing sensor.

Missing sensor near the back of the intake manifold.

Missing sensor near the back of the intake manifold.

Cut off wire to the right of the missing sensor.

Cut off wire to the right of the missing sensor.

I believe that the sensor is known as an air intake temperature sensor or switch that controls cooling fans. These fans may continue to run even if the engine is turned off. I believe that the part number of this sensor is either 928 606 218 00 or 928 606 217 00. However, I am not sure.

Unfortunately, I have no idea what the cut-off wire is or where it connects to. I would guess that it connects to the missing sensor somehow via a female adapter wire with three female holes in a triangular formation.

Would you be able to help me identify the missing sensor and cut-off wire and figure out how to repair/replace them?

Thanks in advance!
Shahzore

P.S. This is my first post on Rennlist. Please don't burn me alive

that 3 pin connector is s diagnostic port for a porsche factory tool. so its fine. that "wire" looks like a loose vacuum connection to something.

The cut of "wire" is a vacuum source. Through it, actuators in the engine bay and inside the cabin are operated. It connects to the blue/black one way valve directly below it. See the four-legged rubber spider below the large (vacuum) hose?

Ps. the air filter is upside down but it doesn't matter much. Don't flip it over now because dirt will get inside the engine.

Ps 2. Welcome! For a first post it wasn't bad

Hi Ducman82 and Leon Speed,

Thank you so much for your quick responses! I'm glad that I mistook the Porsche diagnostic port for a missing sensor. That's one less component I need to worry about.

As for the cut-off vacuum source wire/hose, I'll start digging underneath it and look for the valve where the vacuum hose is supposed to connect to. I'll take pictures and put it in my follow up reply so that other folks can see it.

Is there a quick and easy way to repair broken vacuum hoses? Or will I have to replace the entire hose?

Thanks again!

It doesn't seem cut, just disconnected. Just plug in the check valve. I can see it in the last picture.

That being said, from the few pics the engine will need a lot of work if you want it to run like it is supposed to be. But go slowly and have fun.

Thanks again Leon!

Ok great. I'll give that a shot.

Haha yeah the engine is loud, shaking, and may be misfiring. I'm planning on changing the spark plugs and spark plug wires as well as the temperature sensor that triggers the coolant flush (from the coolant tank to the engine/radiator). I may also have to change the timing belt. The car has 102k miles so the belt may need to be changed.

Let's see what the spark plugs and temp sensor accomplish.

Do you have any engine-related suggestions?

It would make quite an extensive list, but to pick a few important ones: check the flex plate play, change the fuel lines and only run a 15W-50 or 20W-50 oil.

For the riming belt: only use Porsche or Gates.

Parts: Roger at 928sRus, 928International. 928 super stuff: Greg Brown, Precision Motorwerks. Many other vendors here with their own specialty items.

And read, read, read this forum, starting here: https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...questions.html

Hummm, an 86 5 speed could this be the car you bought?
Please post pictures of your progress.
Good luck on your project

Omg.... that is the car!! How did you know Mrmerlin?!?!

After reading the comments in that thread, it sounds like the car is in much worse shape than I thought lol. Didn't know the transmission is corroding.

Ah well. What's done is done. The car is mine now. I'm just gonna gut the interior and put Recaro seats. I'll probably install a Stage 3 clutch with a sequential option and a hydraulic brake for drifting action

I can't wait to bring this to the race track!

P.S. I hate the damn trunk lol. I'm gonna weld a metal ball to the frame and install a trunk hood strut eventually.

Hi Mrmerlin,

Thanks for asking!

I've been busy all weekend and couldn't do much with the car. I'll start working on it tomorrow and get the vacuum hose back in place. It appears to be teared and will probably need some tough glue or tape. I will also drain the transmission fluid and put in new fluid.

Today, I've been looking online for a good deal on a 1985-1986 compatible spark plug wireset and air filter box holder (both wireset and filter holder are cracked and old). However, I could not find either one for under $200. Looks like I'm gonna have to settle for $250ish prices ;(

As for headlights, I'm thinking of getting LED ones that change color via an iPhone or Android app. They look really nice and should match any paint job or wrap.

*crossing my fingers for good weather tomorrow*

Shahzore
