That could explain the bumper shock. Nice work getting it out. It is, indeed, a one-shot thing. They're filled with oil that bursts out on impact.

Thanks interesting. I didn't know that. There was no sign of any oil so maybe it's been compressed for some years.

As you said, front license plates are required in California, but it's amazing how many cars don't have them.
