The head lights pictured are correct for US cars (early models), and those early Euro's which were put through the Federalization process. They are 7 inch diameter with a chrome trim ring. ROW and later 928's came with the 8 inch H4 housings.
It is not a requirement to change them now, if you import an ROW into the USA these days, as the later 928's did come with them.
Some Euro imports got side marker lights front and rear, some only got rears, some none at all......another addition was side impact door beams. Speedometers were changed from KPM to MPH as well, even though the rest of the instruments/idiot lights were left written in German.
Normy points out other differences.....
As for VIN numbers, the early Euro's had no specific designation that I am aware of, however, when cars went to the 17 digit VIN number--the ZZZ came into existence for the Euro models. Errka can give you more info on specific year model changeover and such.
As with any of these, the Euro VIN number is no guarantee that the rest of the car will have the Euro components (ie: cylinder heads, cams, intakes and throttle body--- even the front fenders or rear bumper cover may have been changed out).
Caution should be also taken when purchasing Euro's in years 80-82, as some of them are 4.5L 229hp engines (mine was) and then the "S" models had the bigger 4.7L 300hp engines. Engine block stampings, casting numbers for the rest of the parts, is the only way to be sure you're buying what you think you're buying.....some (or all) of these parts may have been changed out over these many years.
There may be other subtle differences, but these are the most talked about amongst 928 owners.

The 4.7L 300 hp "S" K-jet engine was 1st installed in 1980.
Code on the engine is M28:11 for 5spd; M28:12 for auto.
Codes of M28:09 or :10 would be for the 4.5L euro and codes of M28:13 or :14 would be a US version (L-jet)
VIN codes for '80 would be something like this:
92AO80xxxx = ROW (euro) 928 w/4.5 L K-Jet
92AO81xxxx = US version 928 w/ 4.5 L L-jet
92AO82xxxx = ROW "S" model w/4.7L 300HP K-jet

Beautiful!
BTW I tried to run the VIN on the OC Decoder for you but it came back with no info available - try putting request on the VIN decoder thread as Rob accesses a different database than the OC one..

'80 ROW 928S
In looking at the intake photos I notice a "bulging" of the rubber connection hoses between the plenum and the spider "legs" I have not seen this before. is this simply the effect of 36 years of heat cycling or something else?
#23
Not sure.
I'm guessing that is the best explanation. Lots of heat effected challenges. Its the original paint underneath a respray but its a good respray. A nice polish helped. I'm able to compare to the original 911.

Mine are so old and stiff there is no way they could bulge. Don't know where I could get replacements for euro s tubes. Roger?

I think this car is for sale now on Craigslist for $21,500. Unless there is another rare oak green metallic Euro S located in Minnesota!

Yes--unfortunately it is for sale. My kid chose a more expensive college than planned for. Love this car. Made a lot of progress. Everything but some of the interior. Brought it back to all its horsepower.
