Default So I took apart my spare 4.5L motor - w/pics

I bought this spare motor a few years ago, cheap.

I was told 90K miles, its from a 1980 4.5L auto.

Everything not metal on this was hard, cracking and brittle.

I got this motor for some parts, and practice working on it. I had previously removed the water pump, which was a cheap rebuild with a rusty metal impeller. When the motor was put away, water was left inside.

So I wanted to take it apart to put in storage buckets- takes less space in my garage. Jeff- Speedtoys joined in the fun and helped break it down.

Here is was to start.

a little while later...

check out the oily studs!

upside down for awhile while I have lunch, drain out the old oil and water still in the block- the drains were plugged shut!

the cam carriers

the fun in the bottom of the pan. not many oil changes on this one.

another look at the heads. I think they are good- one had a small dime size coorosion spot.

the housing for the water outlet still on the head-- the bolts snapped off ( the only spot) when we tried to remove it.

starting to take out the pistons.

the first rod bearing.

pistons out and working on the cradle. Lots of nuts!

cradle off!

Euw. A look in the oil passages behind the oil pump.

Crank thrust bearing- ok. the crank free play was in spec

crank out! HEAVY! looks ok, journals look nice.

the worse bore scoring. easily felt with finger nail

dirty pistons!

Comments?

The Block also had damage in the water pump impeller area- due to scoring from a water pump impeller. I Sold the block to Carl- it will become a coffee table!

So, who told you that an engine in pieces takes up less space than an assembled engine....?

Why turn a good block into a coffee table? Interesting to look at the waterpump wear marks (which look minor to me, but I'm using this darn tablet right now...and pictures always look clearer on the computer at work) and where the timing belt was riding on the cam gears.

Interesting to see what 90K looks like in one of these engines. I have a 78 laying on the floor on the garage, too, that will be disassembled soon.

Thank you, for sharing all of the great photos.

Brian.

Looks like dinosaur oil judging by the extensive varnish.

did you see the pics of the holbert engine... 20 years old, near 50k miles, and 120 race days? the darn thing looked brand new everywhere , but the head gaskets.

this is an engine of neglect. beatened, battered and left for dead.

Assembled i could not move it around much. 500 lbs on that pallet and dollies. Now its in two big Costco yellow/black storage bins, on my shelf. I have more open floor space now.
