Default New engine harness - Starter wiring

The new front engine harness I am installing from 928 motorsports has a large red wire, small white wire and smaller black wire for the starter connections.

The white wire is shorter than the black leading me to believe it goes to the middle connection and the black on the bottom; however, the lug on the wire is too small for the middle screw but fits the bottom.

I would just ream it out (I had to drill the red to get it to fit), but thought I would check with others to see if they have run into this and which goes where?

Thanks for any help

Call Carl and ask him. You'd think by now he'd be able to purchase the proper colored wire like the rest of us have.

The only way to know for sure is to check the pin outs on the 14 pin connector and see what wire goes where.

Pin 14 should be yellow and goes to #50 on the starter, it's the main starter feed when the ignition is turned to position 3 for cranking.
Pin 7 should be black/yellow trace and goes to #16 on the starter.

No idea what colors he has going where but popping the cover off the 14 pin should tell you what is where. Hope that helps. I looked for my spare starters to see what is middle and other but I sent them all off as cores. Sorry.

To answer your initial question, yes, many others have had this issue.

SeanR makes a far better wiring harness for the same money - fully color coded as per the original and totally plug and play - a real work of art. Send it back and buy a real one. You should not have to do any modifications.
He is also around at the weekend for serious customer service if ever needed as you can see.

And use the proper size terminals.....

I'm trying to imagine why anyone puts up with that crap.

I have one of Sean's harnesses sitting in my garage for when I do a TB/WP swap. Don't want to take the supercharger off twice if I don't need to. Almost want to pull the engine just to clean stuff up and make it 1000x easier to put in the new harness (cause I can stand in the engine bay and just do it.)

Sean thank you for the help.

One item I forgot to mention is that this is for a 16 valve engine. I checked continuity, the white (shorter) wire is connected to pin 14. The black (longer) wire is connected to pin 10.
This is the same as the old harness which has pin 14 being connected to the bottom terminal (#50 ? ) of the starter (as I marked it when removing).
The black then goes to the middle post (# ? ).

I have had to modify both ends of the red lead - at the post by the 14 pin connector (it was too wide) and then at the starter (hole to small).

Roger / Greg
I agree that I should not have to make modifications and this has been a disappointment. I am not sure about returning it as it has been modified and I purchased it in 2014 - just now installing it.
I do have concerns now. Some of the wire sizes are not the same as the old harness. I will call Carl and let him know and ask some questions.

I really appreciate everyones help with this. The 81 is finally coming back together, one piece at a time.

I purchased it in 2014
That explains a lot, we have been making them for a long time and they have constantly gotten better.

Happy to help, give a call and let me correct it for you.

Tom, I remember this being brought to my attention about two years ago.

I did some investigating and we changed some wired connectors to alleviate the problem at that time.

I have a staff meeting tomorrow at 9 AM and I will be talking to the fella here that actually makes them for me. I'll check it out and get back to you about it. If you have an old wiring harness that had the previous problem (because you bought it two years ago) I will be able to help you with it, or you could send it here for correction.

Actually, Carl, the very first harness I installed from you was a work of art....everything fit and it worked great.

The most recent one that a customer brought me to install was such a POS that I charged the customer additional labor to install.

Lugs were the wrong size......the large positive post near the 14 pin and the ABS post would not fit between the two plastic "ears", the alternator field terminal was too small, one of the starter terminals was too small....and one of the oil pressure sender wires had been cut too short and was extended with a butt connector under the loom.

As noted above, you need a bit more than a meeting....pull out harness, look it over closely, and then try to install it.

Thank you for the information, Greg. I have printed this out and I am going to go over it connector-by-connector with the tech here that makes them. We make them in-house, so I will have no problem having total control over it.

If it is wrong, I will correct it. If I can improve the product, I will. The challenge for us in this case is that the wiring harness the customer has is 2+ years old, and I can already tell from the colors he is describing that it pre-dates several upgrades/improvements we have already made here. Even so, I am having our current product checked over to confirm we have no connection issues or wrong lugs at any/every connection.

Tom,

Maybe you have it already in the car so far you do not want to pull it out, but I want to offer if you would like to send it back to have it replaced with our current product, I will repair/replace it at no charge to you.
