Default 1985 Euro Project Prussian Blue/ Blue

So I got another project, its a 1985 Euro 16V auto trans, Twin dizzy.
pretty much needs lots of all the things they all need.

I thought I had a new local owner that was going to tow it away from my driveway.
But NOOOO ...
So after some prodding from the shop owner where I work,
I got it towed to the shop and now its getting fixed........... Oh well, here we go.

This car came from CA and previous from Washington State.
I had some Assistance from Bill Ball to put eyes on the machine while it was held in its cage in CA.
I had a hope that he could have strung the belt and got it running,
as it turned out having it towed to PA was the safe way to go.

I bought it sight unseen, and the mechanic that was trying to figure it out said "all it needs is the belt put back on and it would run".

Now we all know what that means.........NOT.

Anyway I will populate the thread with old and new pictures,
I am getting excited to hear it run,
But first things first, here are the before buying it and and then sitting at my house for 5 months while I tried to figure out how to make this car do something.

So as you can see the right side cam has been damaged,
I put a new cam pulley on it and strung the belt,
dropped in a battery and spun it over, it cranked yeah!
a few sprays with some either and the thing fired off. So OK.
Anyway I had other projects to finish so this was a back burner project.

The car sat all summer in the driveway,
while I was collecting the parts that it looked like it might need.

As fall got here I decided that I didnt want to fix this ole buzzard,
so I was searching for a new courageous owner that might want / like a cool project.

When that fell through.

I told myself if I take that hood Off,
I am going to fix that buzzard.

So work is slow at the shop so the Boss says,
" if you have a project you should get it in here and get going on it"

So after pulling the plugs and doing a compression test,
the numbers were pretty good in 4 cylinders 210 a few others were about 75# lower,
plus the #1 #8 plugs appeared to have coolant indications , so that means an engine out program, this was also enhanced by the damaged cam so now that can be fixed as well.

Anyway its getting an engine reseal and HGs and valve job and all systems are being gone through.
The fuel tank was open and had the varnish deposits the fuel pump was missing,
everything in this car was old and dirty.

The one surprise was that I looked under the car while it was parked outside and discovered it has Headers so this ought to be fun!

BUT it did have a full marine blue leather interior that was pretty shrunk,
so I was experimenting with the Nivea cream and its working.

I have more pictures to post later

Sounds like you are going about it the right way...by pulling the engine. Looks like the car has some pretty good bones. Like the rims, too.

Will the cam be difficult to find?...or could you have it welded and remachined?

Brian.

The cam is already fixed,
the machinist widened the keyway slot and made it longer,
then made a new key to fit the wider cam slot then,
The top part of the key is cut down to fit the new pulley.
It had bent valves, So replaced 3 Intake valves and 2 Exhaust valves.
the Euro valves are bigger than the US 16V.
More to come

Nice project. Are the rims pollished? My '85 is the US version of your car (Prussian Blue with dark blue interrior).

Love the snow picture. Everything looks so virginal. No tracks. No footsteps. Beautiful.

Is there a known story behind all the bent valves? Are we talking piston contact..?

Excellent save on the camshaft, BTW...

Stan,
Nice idea on the cam shaft snout repair. Do you have any pictures of the finished product? I have my original cam shaft with the same type of damage that I've been reluctant to toss as I know these cams are getting harder and harder to find. If I can find a suitable repair method I may consider having it fixed.

Got the heads back so they are installed today with the cam towers.

I used the 20 Nm then 2 X 90 deg torque method,
then wait for a few hours,
then start in the middle and unscrew 1/4 turn then retorque to 67 ft/lbs,
turns out all the nuts returned to the 1/4 mark I made.

The one head has a bit of corrosion but its not on any of the sealing areas.
Going with Greg Brown cam tower gaskets.
My pictures of the cam repair didnt turn out so I will take a few more.l

This engine is a work of art while its on the bench, too bad you cant see much of it while its in the car.

Watching Stan work his magic humbles me to remember what a master can do in several days that a lowly amateur like me can't accomplish in 7-8 months.

Keep them pics coming...
