Default New 928 Owner pics and questions temp / brakes

I already posted a question regarding my 928 (86.5) and was helped very quickly (thanks) - Now I finally have her after a lot of work, I wanted to share some pics and I also have a couple of questions.. FYI I'm a die hard air cooled 911 owner, so this is very new territory for me!

For the record, the work that was just carried out included the timing belt (with water pump etc.), new motor mounts, numerous motor and transmission gaskets changed, a million and one electrical issues resolved, new disks and pads, trailing arm bushes, all belts, new thermostat and all new power steering lines.. the list actually goes on - you can imagine, this has car has cost me a few bucks..

Anyway, my first question - the car seems to run a little hot (note I live in Miami, it's not very hot here at the moment though). To be precise it usually sits just under the second white line and I assume this is a little warm (on the highway the temp comes down to around half way). The thermostat that was installed was part number "928 106 129 17" I hope this is the right one.. I don't think there is air in the system but I do need to check.

Secondly, I have a strange problem with my brakes - when the car is cold, if I put my foot on the brake it has a very strange feeling. Basically it feels a bit ABS like (the peddle does not sink to the floor) and the brakes are completely ineffective plus the car pulls to the right. As soon as the brakes have warmed up all these issues disappear and they work perfectly.. I would assume there is something wrong with the servo or the master cylinder?

Thanks for the help in advance,

Nick

Very nice, and another South Florida '86.5! I may have seen you driving it a few months ago? I saw a red 928, older body style on I-75.

Regarding the temps, my car usually sits a little above the lower white line, closer to the middle if it's hot and in traffic, and in drive-thrus (weird, I can't explain it, but my fan clutch maybe could use more oil) it can approach the upper line. When you did the thermostat did you replace the gasket thing behind it? That's critical. When I did mine, I thought the gasket was missing, but it was there...just the rubber had all deteriorated, leaving the metal ring behind. Pry that out but stuff a rag in the hole leading down to the water pump first, because that ring WILL jump like a spring and head straight for that hole. Ask me how I know that.

Not sure about the brake issue....

First welcome to the Dark side and deep Shark waters

For the Temp, does the heat work, if not good indication of Air in the system.
Other things to check would be to check the Fan clutch, when cold (engine off) it should not have much turning resistance, when hot (engine off) it should.
Does the Aux Fan come on?
Was the radiator removed / cleaned out?
Also get a Infrared Temp gun and measure the actual Engine temp and Temps in and out of the rad.

Brakes: were they flushed and were new rotors done w/ the pads?
If so then maybe a sticking caliper?

Good luck w/ your new ride,

Dave

Nice looking rig. Congratulations.

I'd probably look for a caliper hanging up, or a bad brake hose, if the brakes were done recently and the mechanic manhandled the situation (forcing caliper or dropping caliper). Especially, if the car has been sitting for a long period of time, or the brake hoses look original.

My 84 runs right below the second white line when the second/auxiliary fan kicks in, usually on the hottest of days (say ninety or better) here.

Good luck,

Brian.

I have 2 '86.5's, one the temp sits just above the first line, the second is just below second line. Neither overheats and i.r. shows temps on both motors same.

Thank you all - I forgot to mention that the fan clutch bearing was replaced as well so no issues there! Also yes, the gaskets were changed with the thermostat as well.. It sounds to me like just under the second line is not something I should be particularly worried about, although mentally it seems wrong to me.. I haven't tried the heat as I have it set perfectly to blow cold air and I don't want to change it as it's temperamental to say the least haha!

Regarding the brakes, my shop is swearing blind it's the master cylinder but I had the same problem with an old BMW I own at it turned out to be a collapsed brake hose.. The whole system was also bled and it has new fluid.

Wasn't me on I-75 but be sure to look out on I-95 as I commute daily to Fort Lauderdale from Miami Beach!

The fan clutch is filled with silicon and that is what was being questioned...since it runs cooler on the highway you probably do not have enough airflow from the belt driven clutch. That is what was being commented on...
The aux/ac electric fan comes on when the A/C is on and/or when the temp hits about 3/4 or more by a thermal switch in the radiator.

bleed the brakes and see if that effects anything. there should be no temp change that should fix or change the function. if there is air in the calipers, then that can render one more effective than the other and cause a pull. the heating air moves or expands the bubble so that the brakes then work. (one possibility).
