Default rubber thing on the tie rod

Half way on the tie rods, there is a rubber thing where the boot ends. The rubber thing on one of my tie-rods is loose, it slides freely over the tie rod. On the other side it is fixed to the tie rod. What is the proper way? And if it is supposed to be fixed, how ca I re-fix the rubber thing on the tie rod?

Those are the racks stops. They can move but ultimately get sandwiched on full lock left or right.

No, I believe he is talking about the rubber grommet/collar that goes around the inner tie-rod shaft and holds the outer portion of the steering rack boot in place.

The rack stops ride next to the inner tie-rod joint (towards the rack) and do not have anything to do with the mounting of the boot.

The collar moves on the tie-rod shaft, somewhat, but it's normally a tight fit. In reality, I don't see to much of an issue...unless it gets to the point where it allows water and dirt into the boot itself. Maybe, put some sort of adhesive on the grommet if it seems to loose.

That's correct, I mean that collar. If this has nothing to do with the boot, than I have another quedtion: how do I fix the end of the boot?

That rubber thing is supposed to ride in a groove on the tie rod. I'd think "no worries" if it doesn't as long as the boot is intact. Not worth replacing the tie rod and getting an alignment. I'd put it on the list for the next time your suspension is getting worked on.

Ad,

Sounds as though the rubber has perished as they should be a tight fit. Did my tie rod ends a couple of months ago and the gaiter end slips over that rubber piece that usually comes with the tie rods.

I still have these on the old tie rods - assuming they are removable maybe I can send you one if you pm your address details as my daughter is currently visiting Oman and flies back to Norwich via Schipol Tuesday night/ Wednesday morning - if there is a postal facility in Schipol maybe she could pop it in the post for you whilst in transit? That or do so when she lands in the UK a few hours later.

Default lt can be removed...

Once you remove the outer tie-rod and nut...it should slide right off the inner portion. Unfortunately, I just tossed my old tie-rods in the trash last week.

I'd say if the rubber is shot, it's about time to replace the inner and outer tie rods. They are cheap and now is the perfect time to do so. New inners come with outers so why not do the pair?
