The children know, they have not yet been told what to think.
2 stories of many, from last year, on a ferry ride from PEI to Nova Scotia we were reloading when a young family came by, a young boy, probably 6-7 says to his Dad " I love this car it is so cooool" as he runs his hand over the fender in the gentlest of ways following the lines, his dad just says you are so right and smiles to us.
Second story my wife took it to school one day and was talking to a parent the next who explained that her son, 5 years old, had nearly jumped out of his skin in excitement when she had driven by exclaiming " Look Mom Look, a real race car.
The future is bright,
Lance

Like others I have several stories. But most recently a family member wanted a ride. As we were leaving my brother records us leaving with a cell phone. According to my brother and in the video you can hear one of them excited about the sighting. Excuse the loping I'm way over due for a top end refresh.

When I bought the car almost 1.5 year ago I had it delivered on a flatbed.
Asked the son then 10 if I could take him to school in it. The answer was NO.
I asked why and the answer was that it stinks (were running very rich) and it's OLD. Yes but it's a classic and it will be nice when I'm finished. Still a big NO.
Now after more than a year and having a few comments from friends about the "cool" car and the interior refreshed, CIS overhauled and the car is running fine my son can't wait to go for a ride. He even stop playing PS4 to go with me
So there is hope

Today, I went to pick-up a friend. As I was waiting for her outside her condo, an elegantly dressed African American lady walked-by and said: "Wow - you are keeping it very clean. I have not seen one like these in a long time!"
Then she proceeded to tell me that the Panamera is the closest Porsche model to it these days. She knew that the 928 hadn't been made since the mid 1990ies, and that it had been in production since the 70ies.
We chatted a bit more about Porsches. When my friend came out, she walked over to a burgundy Cayenne that was parked nearby, and drove off...
My friend had never before seen my 928 before and kept raving about how nice and cool it is.

On the way down from DC with my new purchase on a trailer, I stopped for gas outside of Williamsburg. A young guy filling up a moving van asked me "that your Porsche?" I smiled said "yeah just bought it." Got a thumbs up and a "that thing is bad a$$" from him. Bad A$$ indeed, even on a trailer.

On a journey to Canada in 2014, we had three cars in a caravan. In one of the long stretches through Utah, out in the middle of nowhere, we drop out of lightspeed when coming upon a row of cars traveling at posted speeds. As we passed a minivan, three kids with faces plastered on the side window smiled and gave us the thumbs up as we returned back to lightspeed, exhaust roaring as if it was saying adios to them. I'll never forget the look on their faces as we roared by.
Same trip, leaving Texas, we stop for gas out in West Texas at a remote gas station. A crew of road workers was working on the side of the road and gave the caravan a thumbs up and yelled, "gun it!" The 928 just has an affect on people.

I've got two pretty good ones, when I picked up my black/plum red 87 S4 from Sacramento on 9/28 2013 I had to drive it back to west Texas over the span of three days. On Saturday we drove from Lake Tahoe to Vegas. We'd reserved a room at the Wynn Hotel and we drive up at the valet so they can park car and for us to unload our luggage. At that point young kid walks up to us and looks at the car and the badge and just stares. My GF at that time says he likes your car which was obvious. We start walking towards door with our luggage and young kid is just about to get into my car as one guy comes out of hotel entrance and says, "holy **** a 928!" Pulls out his phone and starts talking pictures of my car as the kid drives away.
Second story, one day a friend asks me to drive him to VW dealer so he can pick up his car. As we're driving on the highway I notice a white diesel truck following my every move they cars. And keep an eye on him and he starts getting closer and closer. I tell my friend that someone is following us he looks back and says were good it's us two vs one. We drive to dealer ship and guy is still on my ***. Drive up and park he parks right next to me, gets out before we do and I say, let's get this guy and before I could get out he's at my door. I had my right fist clinched ready to beat his *** as he starts yelling, I" want your car! Tell me how much you want for it I want it. I had one and miss it........" Couldn't believe a car could cause such chaos. Anyways he offered $6,000 more than what I paid and haven't sold it to him at all!
I love my car!

I've posted this before, but it fits here.
A few years ago a friend was running in the Ferrari 360 Challenge Series at Sears Point and he invited me to come out and offer support.
I was driving the platinum metallic '82 928 in my avatar. As I pulled up to the ticket taker, I rolled down the window and handed her a $20 for the admission price. She waved me off and said "that's OK, Ferarris get in free today". I said "ahh, OK" and drove up to the gate where they have you sign a release. The guy handed me the clipboard with the release to sign and asked "are you driving on the track today"? I said "ahh no - just observing". He said "OK" and waved me into the Ferrari/Maserati parking corral.
Most fun I've had with my "Ferrari" in the 21 years I've owned it....

I bought my '88 S4 site unseen some years ago. The S4 was in New Jersey, I was living near Seattle. Flew out to NJ to drive it home to Seattle. Found the car needed just a bit more work then a quick oil change and once over (of course).
Got in touch with Capt Earl who graciously agreed to go over the S4 from head to toe on very short notice and at a very reasonable rate. We worked hard together and I was satisfied it was good (enough) to go.
Being that is was January I opted to take the southern route home, New Jersey to Tennessee, then straight across to SoCal, then up the coast to WA . While traveling through the ice storms in Oklahoma that year I spotted a familiar shape approaching in the eastbound lanes of I40. It looked just like a 928. As it got closer I could see it WAS a 928! Holy cow, what were the chances?!!!
Sadly, they did not seem to notice me. But it put a smile on my face and lifted my spirits (as if they needed more lifting as I blew down the highway at x miles per for hours on end in my new 928!
Just as I was basking in all my 928 S4 5 speed awesomeness I noticed the next exit sign on the highway for Earlsboro.
What the?! Ha ha, my only 928 sighting of the trip and it was right outside Earlsboro. I had just come from Capt. Earl's place. Without his help my entire road trip would not have happened.
Seemed like a glorious coincidence to me at the time and is a treasured memory of that trip. -Ed

Subject: 928s vs Testarossas
Ken Kasik's and Stephen's (don't have his surname) remarks about 928s versus Testarossas yanked a funny memory out of my failing brain. Several years ago I was sitting at a traffic signal in Palm Beach, heading for one of the bridges that connect to the mainland. I had my 82 year old aunt in the car with me.
This particular bridge has only one lane in each direction, but the approach to it has a parking lane to the right of that. There were no cars parked next to me, but about four or five hundred feet ahead there were several cars parked just short of the bridge. A clown pulled up next to me in the parking lane in a TR and proceeded to rev it up like he was on the drag strip at Moroso. When the light changed we both nailed it. My poor old aunt was in deep shock, screaming at me to slow down. I couldn't. The devil was holding my right foot down. (I hate myself when I occasionally do things like that}
We were absolutely neck and neck for the first four hundred feet. The last 100 feet were taken up by Tazio Nuvolari in the TR sliding with all four wheels locked up to avoid smashing into the parked cars ahead of him. I figure that he probably flat spotted about 1500 dollars worth of tires.
My aunt was extremely narrow minded about it. Even after I told her that she had just become part of history by riding in one of the very few cars that ever outdragged a TR on a public street. She of course, could care less, not knowing the difference between a Testarossa and the Graf Zeppelin.
A few days later I parked next to a TR and went to lunch at one of the local hangouts. When I came out the TR was gone and someone had "keyed" my car. I can't get back at him unless I key every TR in Palm Beach, and they're all over the place, and of course they're all red.
My aunt told me that God was punishing me. She may be right, but the guy who works on my car compounded out the scratch and it was worth it. Note to Bill Crosby et al. No lives were endangered. No pedestrians or other cars nearby.
The only damage done was to the TRs tires, and the driver's ego and underwear. Also, when we reached our destination, my aunt, who had been slowing down the past few years, sprang out of the Porsche like an Olympic gymnast and never even thanked me. I felt deep remorse for close to three nano seconds. After all, isn't this one of the things that 928s are about? Besides, I'll bet Tazio will think twice before he tries to drag race anyone in a parking lane again.

As much as I like driving my 928, seeing one on the road always gives me a thrill.
It is one beautiful car.

I had mine in storage for many years and recently (last year) broke it out
After going over everything the cars looks like brand new (88)
My goal was to have it done to take on a little road trip to Pittsbutgh area to a wedding
As I pulled into the hotel which was packed the baggage guy walked up and as I opened the rear hatch he proclaimed Wow look at this space ship .... What a beauty ..... Was this a ground up restoration ? I replied .....no it was all original....paint ....interior ....etc
He could not believe it
Now more than ever I get comments about the car they can not believe the condition and the sound ....full Borla no cats
Truly a timeless car

Comments during car show
I was at a big car show this summer driving very slow through the display area with my 1984 928S and I heard two guys comment:
First guy - "Wow, that's one (my 928) you don't see everyday!"
Second guy - "Yea, surprised it's still running!"
Did not make that up, just two guys talking.

I stopped outside of a gas station one day and a drunk man getting his car towed walks up to me and compliments the car. Then says "This is a Ferrari right?"
Made me laugh, the friend I was with still jokes about it.
After reading this thread I guess it's not uncommon for people to think it's a ferrari

Last year I had Sean Ratts put on a new x pipe and remove the cats and rear muffler (also added some larger resonators for a better sound and less drone). Anyhow, a few weeks ago at a light I had a C5 Corvette pull up next to me and revved his motor. His exhaust sounded pretty good, but with no cats and no mufflers on mine it was no contest. He rolled his window down and asked, "what kind of exhaust is that?". I just told him "no exhaust, just pure pipes and pure sound!"

I had a guy in a chipped diesel truck do a black smoke rev as I came up beside him, trying to make a cheap point. Although no X-pipe the car has RMB, so I pulled up and revved back, although mine include wheel spin.
He then pulled up and gave me the thumbs up. These cars can make awesome sound.
