New LED Option for our friends with 7" headlamps
If your 928 is a US Model fitted with the 7" sealed-beam headlamps, you may have been wishing for some better illumination and a modern look as well.
Technology has just lent you a hand - a new headlamp assembly is available now by GE that is just the ticket for these cars. Called the GE Nighthawk, i have tested them, like them VERY much - its a solid upgrade - and have them affordable priced as well.
This is NOT just slamming a LED bulb into a H4 holder and expecting good results.... that idea usually flares and throws light where you don't want it because the lens and reflector are designed for a different bulb.
On the other hand, these assemblies are designed around the LED bulb all the way, so the lensing and the reflector and the subsequent light pattern are correct on both high beams and low beams.
Added Benefit: where the Hella H4's can be a bit taxing on the early car with the old wiring and small alternator, the Nighthawk LED uses a LOT less power! Typically 10.8 AMP draw for a pair of Halogens on low, while the LED will produce more light with only with a 3.6 Amp draw. Your old alternator might not struggle to keep up so much anymore!
Meets and exceeds DOT spec, legal in all 50 states and Canada.
Pricing: I have them at $544 a pair (272 each)
Compare to a pair of Hella H4 headlamps: $144 a pair
Compare to a pair of 8" headlamp buckets $750 to $1000 a pair

Light Pattern, Low Beam
Note the Nighthawk has not only the brightest light but also the best cutoff to not bother oncoming traffic and provide better driving in the fog.

Lamp Pattern, High Beam
The Nighthawk LED headlamps still have the best cut-off and control even on High. The difference in brightness is significantly more than shown, because the camera kept closing down the F-stops on the Nighthawk (you can see how the objects in the background got darker as the camera closed the aperture)

Here is a thread from a fella that already has switched to them:
[QUOTE] I've been using these for a while and they are a super easy install.

Those aren't right. They shouldn't have a gray background, and of course the lenses shouldn't be all scratched up like that.
The fact the back molded cover is so different from ours really makes me wonder: China knock-off? He's only got the one pair.

If i were going to spend that much, i would go with these. They come in black and silver as well.

Given what the led prices have done in the past few years, they will be half that price soon. In the mean time, here's a tasty little treat for older OB owners. I remember when these were three times the asking price, not that long ago.
