the stud is toast or the hole? if its the stud, cant you just pull it out by forceably unscrewing??
if you have to drill and tap... sounds like a timecert? interested to hear how you can fix the block

Ok by "head stud" what ones are you speaking of please?

Head Stud usually reference the large studs that hold the head to the block, think head gasket.

If you are asking about repairing the threads way down inside the deep hole where the head studs go, that's a tricky repair.....even with the proper tooling.

Timesert makes a Cylinder Head Bolt Universal Repair Kit (part #4800.)

This will get you to correct length tools to drill, tap, and install a Timesert into the bottom of that head stud hole. To utilize the entire kit (to center the tooling, which is very important), you will need to "create" a couple of special tools and get some different length bolts to go along with that tool.

Worth noting, Alusil is very abrasive and very hard on drills and taps. The drills and taps in that kit, although very high quality, will be trash in a very short time.

How about I have Mary (office/wife) send you the stuff you need to fix it, seeing as you only need to fix one. (That kit is almost $500, as I recall.)

You can use the stuff and send it back.

You are going to play hell trying to get a stud to match the one you over tightened. The replacement studs are not the same as the ones that came in these engines, originally. (There's no chance of them taking three 90 degree turns.)

I can probably look through my "pile-o-studs" and find you one good replacement, if you need one.

You own and work on 928s.....it's like we are twins!

Call Mary and give her your shipping address. I'll work on some instructions that may/should help. Do you have an air compressor to blow out the hole? 1/4" die grinder ? (Depending on your block casting, you may or may not need to "clean up" the very top of the hole to get my custom locator to fit.)

Were you using new Studs?
If not, what you felt may be the Head Stud stretching and not the threads pulling out of the block.

My God is the support in this community awesome. I feel like I should go out and buy something from Greg just because of this thread.

Thanks for helping to keep our 928s alive!

Head Stud ... hmmmm ...

Reminds me of the time I was in the Saturday morning checkout queue at the hardware store: long leggy blonde purchases being put through by attendant. "Stud Finder ... $14.29 ..."

She felt a tap on her shoulder, and a dear little "Tweety Pie" granny asked: "Excuse me dear - do you think I could borrow that just for tonight?"
