Default Rag in the oil pan

I'm working on Alex G's beauty of a 78.

While doing the OPG I discovered what looks like a shop rag in the oil pan. Pictures show where they were right after pulling the pan.

Doh!

Yep, his baby. It will be leak free when I'm done with it. The crossmember, and a few other bits will be off to the powdercoater tomorrow.

I'm shocked that this rag never got sucked up the oil pick up tube.

Wow that could have been a major issue. Has the motor ever been opened up since new or does he know?

We don't know, he doesn't have any records. The pan gasket was hard as a rock, but didn't look like cork to me, it was black.

Most people use rags to wipe up oil drips on the outside of the engine. Maybe this was a new approach for wiping them up before they make it out

Stranger things have been found inside. Paper towels probably top my list, and once in a while a nut or washer finds its way into the sump from someones careless work in the the cam areas.

The rag is impressive, especially that piece sitting right there in the well. Guessing it made a few trips around with the crank to get torn like that. Good day to buy a lottery ticket!

Here is all of it. This pan will be getting a good cleaning.

Actually the inside of that pan looks very good for (possibly) 37 years. The rag was clearly doing its job.
