Help me come up with an offer. '87 5 speed
Found an '87 5 sp. Red/black with 53000 miles. Always garaged so interior is perfect. Timing belt and WP replaced 4000 miles ago. All original, no accidents.
only problem is the AC needs a charge. Which clearly means there's a leak in the system somewhere and a potential compressor issue.
What do you think this car is worth?

$16-20K, assuming the odometer counts up during the test drive.

But I agree with Rob Edwards - high end of that range for LSD, sport shocks, and heated sport seats, on the low end without those (those are just my preferences). Sounds like quite a find!

I think it's worth more than $20K if the cosmetics are spot on. If he owned the car and was asking for a Sale price, I would have said $25 K. But he's making an offer to buy, no harm in shooting low as long as it's not insultingly low.

It's only worth $5k... call me and I will give you 6K for your troubles..... oh, and just search threads on sport seats, torque vs HP, and also tire upgrade options... you will thank me later..

If the car is as described I'd say it worth very close to ask. I don't see any well maintained, low mile 5 speed S4 cars on the market in the low $20ks and they are appreciating. If it's a good car, make a deal and you will be happy you bought a great car when you did.

6 Months ago, I would have said around $20k if truly as described. But I believe that i have been behind the market increase on these vehicles. Now I would say more like $25k if truly as described since it is a 5 speed. The seller hasn't fixed the AC which is weird if it is an easy fix. So you have to assume the worst on that. Does it have the rear AC? More possible troubleshooting / fixing / spending if so.
Also, you can't verify if the automatic climate control works since the AC isn't working. A lot of times, there are vacuum leaks that lead to costly repairs if you aren't doing it yourself.
IS there a record of the tensioner being rebuilt when the timing belt was done? Did they use the right water pump or a cheapo one? If not, you have to question the quality of that work.
Are they maintenance records that show fuel lines, top end refresh, regular fluid changes, motor mounts? If not, you have some deferred maintenance to catch up on. Would push it to closer to $20k than $25k in that case in my opinion.
You should have a PPI done by a knowledgeable 928 wrench if you are going to spend that much. They will look for other common 928 stuff and confirm the stuff above.
Use those things to negotiate.
I am not a buyer / seller of 928s. So I am not as close to the market as others on this forum. But I do watch the market. What I am saying is don't just take my advice. But those are my 2 cents.

I agree with above. (excluding 928sg LOL). 5 speeds are getting so rare. Buy while you still can.
All that, and if the interior and paint are original and excellent, then you have an opportunity there. 25k would be a great deal for you. 28k would probably be fair for everyone involved. Of course, this is ONLY if everything is there. Even small stuff like tools, Air compressor, keys, user manual etc are all dicker items at that price range.

Get the PPI done. Its worth it.
I feel better after reading it - it gave me a good laugh!
Why? I'm not an 18 y/o 928 leg humper. I'm paying member of this site who already owns a Porsche AND attended Frenzy 19, whos asking for guidance from a communit of current owners. I don't want to overpay and I don't want to insult the current owner. How is that the same as asking for tires, seats and tint?
Don't get me wrong. I enjoy a good ribbing and giving a hard time but hardly feel this thread warrants it.
