Default 1984 Euro Exhaust Manifold Swap

Guys, Can you remove the exhaust manifolds on a 1984 Euro WITHOUT pulling the engine?

The motor mounts are toast so I'm thinking we can pull the exhaust manifolds while we have the engine lifted, steering rack & stabilizer bar down and motor mounts & heat shields removed. The fasteners are a BEAR to get at with collapsed motor mounts and not a lot of room to begin with...

The reason I ask is I have a set of 86.5 exhaust manifolds and a custom made SS "Y" pipe (made to fit the 86.5 manifolds)... Better breathing = Faster going! Not looking forward to pulling the engine if I don't have to...

Thanks, Joel

Yes, it can be done. It may be hard to get all the nuts off. I'd pull it.

Does the Y pipe accommodate the way the later manifolds line up?

Absolutely. Much easier to do as you describe while cross member is out. But take safety precautions if working from below, that engine is heavy.

stock manifolds are very easy to work on and remove , its the headers that need some patience and small hands. both can be done without lifting the engine.

Thanks guys. We'll make sure the car is up on the jack stands securely. Be a lot easier with a lift, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do! Yes the Y pipe was custom made to fit the 86.5 manifold fitted to the Euro... but, best laid plans of mice & men

Thanks again!

Hideously expensive for what it is but your best friend for exhaust manifold nuts. Reversible, compact head, and long enough to break old nuts torqued to 15 ft-lbs 31 years ago.

for breaking them loose, but the mini versions can work to to make short work of the 3 or 4 that might be an issue.. honustly, the stock manifolds are so easy you can reach all the nuts with a socket and swivel and then just power drive them off with the mikita.

the headers....... different story.. we got scots right one off in 5 mins, but the driver side took about 40min.

Jake...

Oh I have TONS of faith and respect your insights like no other... BUT it pays to have more than one "Mechanic" provide input, advice, experience, etc... like that double-headed adjustable ratcheting nut removing mother of all wrenches...

Motor mounts are flattened so it'll be a long day already. Might as well replace the Manifolds and the Steering Rack bushings... WHILE I'M IN THERE!!
