The mains for the early engines used to be on Ebay for way cheap. I wonder if that is still true. I also wonder if those NOS pistons are anywhere to be found like I did... 14 years ago? Probably not.

Greg - Rings for the 4.5L are, as I recall, an issue ($$, availability, different materials, etc). Have you dealt with it recently?

Mine is black with a bit of a sheen - not high gloss, but certainly not matte. Looks like yours Rob.

No, I have not....and since I have not seen the pieces, it is really not any of my concern.....I was only wondering.

I'm willing to bet that the trim has been refinished. I've never seen a '78 with anywhere near that mileage with intact black window trim. Mercedes has the same problem with their anodized trim... it turns a purplish silver as it ages/weathers.

Holy cow, now I know why '78s are slow. Mark scored us an original 5x15 ET60 steel spare tire to replace the AWOL spare in Minerva- This thing is an anchor- 35 and a half freaking pounds. (And another cool sticker to replicate- anyone got a picture of an intact one? ...) :

Between the heavy spare and battery that were in the OB's, could be how Porsche achieved there 50/50 weight balance T

And their award winning polar moment of inertia, with the bigass group 49 battery in an 18.5 lb steel box cantilevered off the diff, counteracted by a 5 pound A/C bracket cantilevered off the block. No wonder people break pieces of the block when they bottom out early compressors- They're all Panzer-tank grade.

The battery and box suspended on the rear of the differential housing was to offset certain harmonics in the driveline. Porsche had to confirm that batteries could withstand the very high G forces of the vibration.....detailed in the book Project 928 it was a huge number....

There were also short 66Ah battery available and it was infact stock version for most markets. This meant different lenght longer positive cable to starter.

Large 88Ah battery was option M197. It was standard in Canada, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden.

Last ditzel removals before Minerva goes off for paint:

'3-hose' Fuel accumulator and filter setup, early '78. Can't see it but both are mounted on rubber vibration standoffs:

The godforsaken right rear wheelwell fuel hose is retained with welded brackets. Whose idea was that?

Twin connections at expansion tank, from accumulator and from the carbon canister:

^^^
That accumulator/filter is sortof a mid-to-late '78 setup.
Early has the accumulator inverted. However Minerva uses the early accumulator (022) w/the late setup. Neat.

P/N's:
Porsche 928 110 197 01 / Bosch 0 438 170 013 (NLA)
Porsche 928 110 197 05 / Bosch 0 438 170 022 (early style)
928 110 197 06 / Bosch 0 438 170 026 (late style)

Ref pic showing inverted accumulator:

Rolled it out of the garage on the dolly that Jake made for it, and pulled it up on the trailer. Easy peasy- especially since I was at work.

A tilting trailer w/winch, right tool for the right job! Concern was the jack points/caddy interface, so this was a bit of tie down overkill. Better safe than sorry, but made the 7 miles trip with no drama.

I am making some adapters that will make the connection between caddy and jack points more secure and less stressed.
