What should a 928 be worth?

I know, we love the low prices when we buy a 928, and then curse them when it's time to sell. But, I congratulate the hell out of myself every time I drive my 928, (so, most days), because it is such an amazing value as a vehicle generally. I think that an S4 in particular is really the best value-priced vehicle in the whole world right now, in an honest "bang for the buck" kind of way. I can't think of a car as good overall, or as intriguing and unique, that is anywhere near as cheap.
Maybe my other fave Porsche, the 968, but they were only made for like 3 years.
I have some family members who seemed "disappointed" in me when I bought this car -- let's just say I don't make a lot of money and they are kind of judgmental when it comes to me having "poor priorities." They imagined that it must have cost quite a bit. But when they found out what it actually cost me to buy, their tune changed completely and they were like "wow, you bought a car with a V-8 engine that looks like this for $14,000 ?? That's an incredible steal! How can that even be?"
So my point is, members of the general public can't believe how little the 928 costs. So that, to me, makes it "undervalued." But of course I realize, the true "value" is set by market forces so in some sense the term "undervalued" is an oxymoron, but we all know what we mean by it.

Brother bought a 57 T-Bird several years ago for $130K. Has been trying to sell it for the last 2 years and hasn't gotten an offer over 50K which he refuses to sell for.
This past spring I was offered $70K for my GTS and didn't take it. The main reason is I don't know of any other car for that amount of money I would like as much.
As far as what they should be worth...just look at the similar year of 911 Turbo. They should be worth at least the same as a car that sold for less new.

Now you're talkin'. But that's the difference between overvalued and undervalued. They probably should meet in the middle somewhere, to have sane and reasonable valuation.

I just got done putting a new set of MMs and trans mounts and new Black Boges into a 1990 S4 auto its showing 45560 miles and boy what a machine ,
after these updated parts are installed the car is so much more perfect.
And its fast, the AC is cold, and the brakes work well, and the tires slip a bit ,
OOhh perfect.
Its gotta be worth atleast 65K Linen met. with white seats and black carpet very pretty

As soon as you buy it for that, one person will agree.
;-)
Does sound awesome though, color combo and performance.
A 'more perfect' 928 is rarified air indeed.
I still think the Bimmer 6 coupe was a fairly reasonable modern equivalent. Must have higher production numbers, I see the Aston analogy but don't know that I'm buying into it.

The 928 should be worth enough for owners to be able to pay specialists and parts vendors enough for them to continue, but not enough to become museum pieces that never get driven. There's also the issue of being tempted to sell.

"Sports car handling" ? Is that what the 928 is supposed to have? Try GT. It doesn't toss around like the Boxster nor is is light and responsive like a miata. Sports car? Yeah the VW CC is just as sporty and responsive. 300 HP is close to Nissan Maxima. I'd love to say that the nearest modern analog is a Aston V8 vantage, but the vantage handles better and the interior has much higher quality. Used they're about what $50k so there you go.
I don't know why you guys constantly are trying to compare a 20 to 30 year old car to newer cars. It's not. Instead of trying to convince yourself why a 30 year old car is just as good as a newer car.. why not just go out and buy the newer car? It just seems 928 owners have such a chip on their shoulder about being in "the porsche nobody knows is a porsche"..

Former Vendor
I'd be happy for sale prices in the mid teens when the day comes to sell one from my ever-growing fleet of early model 928s once they are all back together and pretty again. If I didn't fear spousal castration I'd keep each and every single one I currently own eternally (and probably keep buying more!). They are quite fun to collect and they always bring a smile to my face every time I see one of them, even if it's been sitting for years and is covered with dust in my warehouse or on lift bar in my garage out of commission for whatever reason.
At the end of the day, it all depends on the buyer and what they are willing to shell out for the car in question.

How does it faire to base 911, Boxster, Cayman or Macan? Hint: they look at you in their rear view mirror. Nobody will "race you" in either. Anyone that will is going to give a spanking. Its the challengers and the new vettes that well.. bye bye.
When you grow up and get a real job.. and when you can afford to buy a modern car you'll see that the 928 is good for its age.. but it's 30 almost 40 years old now. I used to think that the 928 was soo amazing. Then I grew up, got a real job and see the 928 for the older classic that it is, that was ahead of its time. Troll = someone who doesn't have your viewpoint I guess...

The point of my first post was simply to ask, what's the cheapest modern car that is in any sense close? Answer is maybe a BMW 6-series? Not very cheap, compared to a $15K S4. I never said, nor would I say, that a 928 is somehow a match for the fastest modern cars. But as a great value performance car, it stands out from the rest. That's why it is undervalued.

This goes to the difference between price and value.
I might get $10k AUD for mine if I try and sell it, but in value is worth more than a new car to me.
