Taking over Manerva and stereo gremlins
Many of you know I purchased Tony's 94 GTS he had painted in Manerva blue. I have finally had a chance to work on the stereo that had a varying hum and the power amps would not usually turn off. I started by cleaning any ground points I could find. When I opened the fuse "trunk" in the passenger area, I almost lost my lunch. This thing really does have a ton of wires going all over the place. As the fog of fuses began to clear I noticed there was a red wire connected to another with electrical tape. When I took off the tape I found the wire was only wrapped around the other?? I soldered them together and the hum was gone.
On to check the connections on the back of the head unit. Again, I found the two amplifier wires wrapped around the switched wire from the head unit. Another solder job and I was back in business. At least I thought. Being a 928, I find that the amps will still stay on some times. After doing some more research, I found that the JVC head unit is defective and doesn't always turn off the power signal to the amps. This is a good example of the notorious intermittent problem. I was surprised that the stereo installer did such a poor job, when Tony has done such a great job with most everything else.

When shopping around for installers, the shop chosen had awards all over there walls and did see some of there work and was impressed. Was not impressed with the install on your Minerva Blue. Even trailered the car to the installer with the interior removed to make the install easier. In hindsight I should have brought her back to correct those issues. T

Well, I thought I had these problems somewhat fixed and know they are back again. I'm going to have to have the head unit looked at to see if it can be repaired before I tackle these issues again. I hope I don't have to remove the head unit with ipod connector in the center console.

Tom, IIRC, you could lift up the inner center console floor and there should be a slot to pull out iPod cord. If not, the center console is held in my by 4 screws easy to get to screws-also under the floor of the console. T

After having the stereo system looked at by a local shop, they didn't find anything wrong except the amps would turn on and off by them selves without ignition on. I was convinced it was the head unit. I ordered a replacement and when I started to take the old system apart, I noticed that one of the amps would turn on and off after I removed the remote power from the head unit. It turned out one of the amps was bad and was turning on the other amp as well. I returned the head unit and replaced the bad amp and everything is good.
On a side note for others that are considering installing a double din head unit and are worried about the depth of the dash, I found the Pioneer head units are not as deep along the top rear. I never got a chance to test the fit, but from the looks of the head unit I believe it would have fit a little flusher.
