It's all coming to a head tomorrow. I'm excited to finally drive a few ( the person that has the white one has two GT's for me to drive as well he is selling)

I don't think the cosmetics have been mentioned: though "superficial", fixes are typically more difficult than the mechanicals. I know I could never get used to a dashboard crack. I know I would never be able to spring for new paint. It's OK to be superficial.
The first one I drove was a disappointment. It was just around town. "Buick", I thought. But I ended up owning that car, heeding the superficials. New rear shocks took out most of the Buick, and it's become my favorite car out on the open roads.

I'm somewhat (completely?) biased, would definitely go for the GTS. Mike Lambert is VP of the Ferrari Club of America and guess what his daily driver is? Yep, a 928 GTS!
Only 406 were made for north America, so each one is a treasure! That will make you feel better as you spend all that money maintaining and upgrading it.

Well to close this thread properly I did drive 3 today. A 928S, S4 and a GT.
Frankly all three given the price being asked were under-whelming in every way, presentation, paint and ultimately after driving them. I was bummed that the white one was a respray that must have been done at a hack shop, far too much to list but it was pretty sad. The interior had a steering wheel that was falling apart and warped dash. It was a auto, I was aware that it started in second gear but the car was sluggish and there was an odd noise coming from the front-end. Sounded like a wheel bearing or possibly a stuck caliper.
The interior seemed so dated. No offense but I have a 951 that was older it it seemed newer and the switch gear on the HVAC system on my 951 certainly did...sure I have seen pictures but seeing and touching in person was different. The car put me in a bad mood right off the bat.
Next I drove the 928 S. It was actually far tighter and nicer than the newer S4, although it was a manual and I had to remember the dog-leg shift pattern I actually liked it except I didn't want a manual or like the color all that much.
Last was a 91 GT. It was black on black and of course also a manual. It was quick, not fast. Again the car was let down by general untidiness throughout which hurt the overall package. I never quite understand people trying to sell cars that can afford a whole hanger to store them but don't keep them absolutely ready for show and tell.
I spent a full 3 hours going over these cars and almost LOL when the pricing was discussed. To his credit he listened and acknowledged as I pointed out flaw after flaw. He asked me to make offers and I said I don't want any of them regardless of price. I did thank him greatly for his time and it was a great learning experience.
I guess it comes down to for me that I love the 928's looks on the outside, not so much the interior and the performance was undetermined but acceptable for what I was hoping to accomplish. Not sure what I will do now. The GTS owner refused my offer and I have decided it's either GTS or nothing at this point.
Thank you all for your sage and kind advice.

Wow, that's a bummer. It sure doesn't sound like you got to experience a well sorted vehicle. That kind of money should get you a really nice, clean, up to date 928S or S4 without any significant issues.

Well, that is a real bummer. I've never owned a turbo 944, but have driven a base model. 944 runs tighter with more road feel. Less luxury. Less power but I get what you are saying about the interior. I always thought it would be fun to own a turbo one day.
Anyway, if you have decided not to pursue it; will you share the contact info for the 91 in PA?

Sounds like you had a good opportunity to really go through those cars, and if they don't tickle your toes, you're making the right choice to walk away. It is a major bummer to find cars not accurately represented when you carve out time to go see them, I hate that. But everyone's definition of 'excellent' differs, as Ed Ruiz used to say around here, your mileage may vary....
If you're not completely closed to the idea of a good 928, and you've got nothing better to do on October 17th, there should be a couple of somewhat better-presented 928s at Sharktoberfest in Anaheim- I'll be there, you're more than welcome to stop by- I have a cure for underperforming 928s.

don't mean to jump in on this thread, but here goes...
i have also recently been in the market for a 928. [i promise i'll do a proper introduction to the board as soon as i get the pics i know you will all be clamoring for.]
i drove 7 different cars around the country, including, i'm sure, the white/blue auto s4, and gt under same owner. you've dropped enough clues that i know this to be the case.
what i want to say is, i think you may be thinking the 928 is a different car than it is. unfortunately, your experience with the 944/951 may be your downfall here. you say the cars were quick, not fast. i think you have that the other way around. these are big GT cars. some might say lumbering compared to a 951. compared to my 996, the 928 is a hefty muscle car. it's fast on the highway and open country roads, but not necessarily quick around town. im sure my 996 is more of a 951 comparison than a 928 would ever be. and i've never considered comparing the two.
don't let any of this discourage you.
i've never driven a gts, but i have a feeling youre not going to find what you are looking for there either. i have been looking for a replacement for a v12 XJS, not a quick sports car. and while different in power delivery from the v12, the 928 is much more comparable to the XJS than it is to my 996.
anyway, good luck with your search, but if you adjust your mindset wrt what the cars were designed for, you will likely have a better experience. of course, if the 70s-80s interior is turning you off, you may never find one you truly love.
i guess that's all for now.
PS: i'm actually really torn over giving up the XJS for the 928.

@ The last post, do a lot of cars being offered for sale show up or is this more me drooling over cars that will be pried out of dead fingers?

Don't have quantitative stats, but off the top of my head there's usually a For Sale sign or two- If you'd like, PM me a cell phone number and I'll text you if any nice automatics show up with a FS sign on them.
