Default The 100k mile dilemma. 97k now, stop driving and preserve the mileage?

It's more of an artificial barrier, the 100k rubicon but I'm thinking of not driving my 88 much so as to not go over 100k.

I know it's just a number, and I know that the car won't be any less useful at 101k miles, but it's a car I'm not going to keep forever, and under 100k is something that seems to stick in peoples mind, right or wrong.

So, I'm going to drive my truck more, and save the miles on the 928. I've got it in pretty good shape now, and want to sell it at some point in the future. Might be subjective, but that's the way buyers are sometimes.

You only live once. Sell it to buy something you wouldn't mind driving.

When 49, 59, etc. of age, thought much about what was coming up next, 50, 60, etc. Same way of thinking with cars. Drive it.02 T

People often set a cut off for mileage when looking for a vehicle, and 100k is a natural breakpoint. It is also a predefined mileage filter on many websites.

But then if you aren't going to drive it, sell it now. What's the value in waiting.

100K used to mean a lot more a decade or two ago when most cars would not make it much beyond 100K. In terms of the 928 world, 100K means absolutely nothing. Perception of a 100K barrier would only mean something to someone not versed in 928s, since these cars are more than capable of exceeding 2-5 times that figure with proper maintenance.

I say drive it.

Dash and seat refurb not done. Too hot this summer working in no AC garage. Once I get the dash finished, and the vac actuator repl then I can redo the seat bolster. It'll be ready then.

I like all the opinion to drive it. Wondering if you are the same folks whining about high mileage cars for sale? hmmmmm?

Already agreed that 100k miles is nothing for the 928 engine, trans or chassis, but perception is reality sometimes.

Here's the be-otch deal. I so like the car, and now with AC it could easily be my DD for years to come. But - tend to drive long distances and can't afford downtime on the road. The 928 is not the best tool for this job, despite it's comfort and ease with high speeds. If I get stuck somewhere - she who must not be named would not be happy. And unhappy is something I avoid at home.

Tomorrow I'm driving to St Louis, and renting a econobox for the job. This might be the reality, that I rent for those trip and use the 928 when in town. I got a bunch of compliments on the car recently now that it's cleaned up and sweet looking.

I think you already know that I am not of that ilk since ALL my cars have well over 100K on them.

You could do what some of us nuts who DD out 928's do.. and dump all the cash up front to make the car reliable

New fuel system front and back, engine sensors/switches, all new rubber hoses, rebuilt ECU's/MAF, repair/replace any crappy aftermarket immobiliser installs.

The only "failure to proceed" events I've had in ownership of 3 daily-driven 928's in 9 years are..

Fuel pump (once - 8 years ago)
Failed LH (once - 3 years ago)
Burst heater hose (twice, two different cars, two different hoses, 7 years ago, and 3 years ago. Which is why my current DD has no old hoses in the engine bay.. all coolant, heater, oil, oil breather, vacuum, PS and fuel lines replaced)

In each case, the lesson was not to cut corners if I want the car to be reliable

Oh, there is one other key reliability element.. make sure it has 5 gears..

I could throw money at it until I'm living in a shack and it'll never be as reliable as Enterprise Toyota Tercel.

Yeah, but that end of the curve has diminishing returns.. how many 9's do ya want?

I smile 99.9% of the time when I'm driving

"mommy, why is that man smiling at us?"
"look away dear, don't make eye contact"
