Default Transmission shaft question

My '82 Porsche 928 did not go to 4th and 5th gear (The gear handle did not go to right from middle ) I opened up a gearbox and I found an interesting thing.

In the attached image, shaft A is engaged by default when gear handle is in middle. Shaft B is engaged when I rotate the gear handle to left. I could not find a way to engage Shaft C. Only two shafts can be engaged. Also there is no way to not engage any shaft. What is wrong ? Could you explain what each shaft supposed to do ?

Shaft A is for 4th and 5th. Shaft B is for 2nd and 3rd. Shaft C is for 1st and reverse. Side to side movement engages the individual shafts, as you have observed. Fore and aft movement selects the individual gears.

Your '82 gearbox was the first year that automatically forced the gearshift lever into the shaft for 4th and 5th gear....which is where it currently resting. You have to overcome the spring on the far right side of your picture to move the selector lever into the 2nd and 3rd position.

Much force is required to overcome the spring which rests on the 2nd/3rd gear shaft to engage 1st and reverse.

Everything looks pretty normal here (in terms of shift selector and shafts.)

What did the coupler that joins the shift rod to the transmission look like? Plastic bushings completely missing?

The coupler looks good and the plastic bushings is solid. Probably it was all right from the beginning and nothing was wrong.

When a gear stick is resting, it was in middle and it could not move to right. I thought that it was in between 2nd and 3rd but it seems like that was actually 4th and 5th. Is this right ?

It seems to hard to know when I shift whether I am in (1st and reverse) or (2nd and third). Is it easy to feel when you drive ? It was almost impossible to me. I was sure that I'm able to shift only two shafts.

Because of the "added" spring beginning in the '82 model, when the transmission is resting in neutral, the gearshift lever would rest off to the right, not in the middle. This resting position would be be in the 4th and 5th gear position...where your transmission is currently resting (in your picture.)

There is considerable additional force required to engage 1st and reverse....far to the right....which you could never get to if 4th and 5th were in the middle.

Sounds like perhaps your coupler was not adjusted correctly?
