Unhappy Defeat in victory

i gave the 928 to a local auto electrician
the guy had helped me out before with 964 electrics, had all the old wiring diagrams so i thought he was the MAN to sort the job

1 heater motor and a/c
2 fog lights not working
3 brake pad warning light flashing every now and then

£90 cash later one relay replaced foglights working
a/c still no go brake pad light done
he came to the conclusion the heater motor relay pack was in need of replacement
so i ordered a used replacement for £50
went to take the old one out and every connection was looking in a poor state
clean them up and amazingly it now works on all settings a/c even seems to kick in
long and short of it was he looked at the resistor and didnt want to get involved
never even took the cover off
if he had found the problem he would have been a porsche electric god again
however he didnt even do the first check making me look like a hero (which im not)
great that i fixed it but had to pay for it not to be fixed

Defeat? I would say your most glorious moment since ownership. You have found out nobody will care for your car as much as you do. Congratulations! Do everything yourself from now on.

And now you know that there was at least one issue tied to connections at the CE panel. How much else could be corrected by following one of the CE clean-up threads here on RL and elsewhere, and a good ground cleaning as well?

I'd say you got a good return on your £90.

In the beginning my motivation to work on my car myself was 1 part to get the gratification of doing it myself, and 1 part to avoid the expense of paying someone else (I can't afford the car if I don't work on it myself). Now my motivations are primarily 1 part getting the gratification of doing it myself and 1 part knowing that with information from members of this forum it is the only way I can be sure it is done right.

Exceptions for me include going inside the engine or the transmission. But with all the money I'm saving DIYing all that I can, I can one day afford to have Greg Brown rebuild the transmission (before hard parts are completely toast inside...not waiting for it to break).

Working on the car yourself has other huge personal benefits. Going over the car and learning all the systems removes the anxious feeling that the car is complex and fear of mysterious and expensive things going wrong. For me this has been the biggest benefit from working on it myself. You will like the feeling of confidence you gain from working on it yourself.
