Porsche never issued a RECALL for this, the service bulletin basically says they discontinued the aluminum carrier style and lists all the parts used with the new steel version. More of a statement that WHEN you need to replace worn ball joints this is what is now available. But that was a different time than today

The 82 I bought in December still had the aluminum ball joints. They are now replaced, along with lots of other stuff. Not a bad job at all.

Hi,

Are there any "symptoms" when driving the car that can indicated the ball joints need to be changed or they just "die" and fall apart at any time, without any warnings like strange noises or something?

Thanks

Regards

The PO told me the alum ones on my car failed at very low speed with no warning.
This would be the first thing I'd check and if necessary replace on any new old 928.

The PO told me that one failed on my '82 and he had a Porsche 'expert' replace it.

The dumb b*****d allowed the mechanic to only replace that one .... and ... wait for it ... he replaced it with a used alum one.

Needless to say I then stripped the whole car, and found all the other abortions perpetrated by the owner previous to him.

I can sort of forgive the previous owner, because he didn't know any better, but I can't forgive the idiot mechanic, nor can I forgive the owner prior to that who was/is regarded as a knowledgeable owner on a 928 email list here.

Hi,

Just one more question about the ball joints:
If I want to replace the four eccentrics, 2 each side, are they exactly the same?
I ask this because the PET says part number 928.341.466.00 supposedly for all four, 2 each side, but states two different numbers in the diagram, numbers 6 and 7!

Thanks for your help!

Regards

Add that to my list of excuses...lol.

Sorry to insist on this but can someone p'lease tell me if the four eccentrics are exactly the same and if they are why in the diagram they appear with numbers 6 and 7?
Thanks in advance.

What a panic attack this is causing to so many. Relax people, if your aluminium ball joints are not worn, they will not come apart. And as said before, ball joints usually come apart at low speed sharp turn (intersections, driveways, gas stations) because that's when they experience the most force. All the ones that ever popped apart were worn out, all of them. It gives you warning if you occasionally check them, they will be moving quiet a bit.

So, the ball actually pops out of the cup (when worn out)...not the cup failing. From what others were saying...l pictured the cup portion of the ball-joint failing (cracking in half) or the whole thing breaking away from the A-arm from metal fatigue. But, this doesn't seem to be the case...from what you are saying.

I'll check the 78's today...and if they are good...they may stay for a while.

Brian.

I saw one come apart on my '83 shortly after I sold it and it popped out. From what I remember reading here over the years, so did all the other ones that had this issue.

note the bulletin states it is acceptable to just do ONE SIDE ! Obviously Porsche was not overly concerned.
