Default Seat Piping Repair?

Hi All,

The seats in my car are in quite good condition- Light Gray leather with Black piping.

However there is one area of the Black piping (~1.5 inches) on the driver's side where it has become cracked and separated.

Other than replacing the whole thing or something else drastic, does anyone have any suggestions on a way to repair this -or improve the appearance?? I searched the Forum & didn't pull anything up.

I figure the fact that it is black in color might work in my favor in making a repair less noticeable -but have no idea what type of filler etc might work.

Thanks in advance

John

I had some broken piping and a little tear in the drivers seat, right where you slide in when settling into the car. I took it to an upholsterer and had the leather panel replaced and the piping fixed for less than $200.

I did the same - took my black drivers seat to an upholsterer. He also replaced the worn bolster panel. Under $200 as I recall.

Default pic of color

Hi all and thanks for replies.

Here are a couple pics I have of the seat color. The color is "Light Gray" per the original Dealer and some dye I ordered and presently working with seems to be a very good match.

Piping and or single panel wear or hole is a very typical repair I frequently get requests for.

Here's some pointers that may help.

Often there is no advantage in sending your seat or seat covering across the country. Most local trim shops can handle these repairs.
Many shops don't have the room to keep your car there while the repair is done.
Often the extra time in unbolting the seat creates issues with stripped bolts and add to labor costs.

Make it easy and reduce the labor cost by taking the seat out of the car or even taking the covering off the seat and bringing it to your local shop.

The typical cost to replace piping is $200 - $300. The piping runs the entire perimeter of the seat. All the stitching along that perimeter must be taken out and resewn with a new welt. The trimmer may offer to do just one section, it will save you a few $s but you'll have a gap or splice.

About the same price for the panel replacement. All stitching is taken out of the section of the seat. The damaged piece is used for a pattern for the new piece and the new piece is sewn in.

If you tell them it's a Porsche or drive up in one, expect the price to go up.

Often a customer will ask that other stitching be replaced WYAI.
In order to do that, the entire covering must be disassembled carefully and all the old stitching removed and resewn. This may take as long as building a new seat covering. Be prepared to pay the trimmer for his time.
The old leather may be dry and brittle. Adding a second perforation may not hold up over time.
In addition the new needle holes may not line up with the old ones.

For rips, scratches, and holes dealers and some shops use fibrenew.com.
Part of your PPI should include examining seats and other upholstered areas for signs of repairs, redyeing or patches.
