looking at an '82 sunroof delete, 5spd, with lsd and 27,xxx miles right now. nice interior too. Might be a two 928 family just because this one popped up locally as a non sunroof. we'll see though.

Not having a sunroof is the best thing, especially if you drive in the rain like I do. Plus all of the extra head room is very appreciated.

So, since I started off with a non sunroof car, the only cars I consider possibly buying are ones without one, which are few and far in between.

My second 928 was a white 87 S4 which had a sunroof, and I just couldn't enjoy the driving position as much, so sold it (tried extended hub steering wheel, moving the seat rail bolts etc.). Driving at night with the roof open was ok, but the bumping my head on the roof a lot wasn't.

My current DD is another 87 S4, also with no sunroof. I won't buy a 928 with a sunroof again unless there's a compelling reason to get it (like one of mine get written off) at which point I'll be having a body shop turn it into a no-sunroof car.

It appears the sheet metal part can be approached 2 ways, replace roof with non sunroof car or weld/patch in the hole. I'm OK with this. But it appears the correct headliner is rather hard to come by. What are the options if you can't find the correct headliner? Is this something an upholstery shop can fab up? or do you HAVE to have the correct headliner to make this look right? And where can I get a non sunroof headliner?

The 944 sunroof is wonderful, big almost like a targa when removed, does that tilt up in the back for serious air venting without turbulence, no issues with headroom.

The 928 sunroof when it works is too small other than some venting of the air, kills headroom, and rarely works well without lots of attention. Its the main reason I didn't buy a new 928 when we traded our 81 for a 944 Turbo. I've always suspected forcing the sunroof was a dealer plan to kill sales of the 928.

I've thought about a roof panel swap many times, and except for a track car I don't see it as worth it. Like Jim said, full repaint, which knocks the budget aspect out of the park. Better to start with an early car and replace everything else than mess with the roof panel.

Wow I must be lucky. I've had 5 928's and all of them had perfect working sunroofs. I really like them. I think the car looks cool when it's parked with the roof open and the windows down. I wouldn't buy a car now without one. Mind you I am in the driest state, on the driest continent on Earth and where I live 13C might as well be freezing. My wife's BMW has one and i just bought her an E91 325i that has the panoramic sunroof, very cool.

It always amazed me when I read "sunroof delete", because in my country, France, it always was an option. Most people choose it, but it seems to be more common to find a sunroof less 928 here than in the USA.

For the period 1980 to 1995:
- 1769 of 22803 928's for the US+Can Market don't have a sunroof. Less than 8%
- 11477 of 29318 928's for the rest of the world don't have a sunroof. A little more than 39%

Well, I like my sunroof, and it works fine too. I do use it regularly.

But, I would have never bought a 928 brand new with a sunroof. It would have cost way more than it is actually worth. It's just too small to add that much value. That having been said, I would not make an effort to delete mine.

Regarding value, yes, I would pay less for sure for a car on which the sunroof had been deleted after market.
