Default What is it with other drivers around the 928 and being complete azzhats?

I thought we'd have a nice gentle drive over to Irving on Sat to look at some cars for my wife. I leave my little community, and as soon as I hit the I-state there's a pickup on my tail and I'm doing 70 in the right lane. He blows by, towing a trailer and less than two miles later I've still got the cruise on 69 and I catch up and pass him, until he starts to speed up. Now I'm in the left lane, and can't get back over. Sigh,,,, cruise off, slow to 66, move over behind, and he slows back down. Mind you, he was in front of me when I entered the fwy.

Couple miles later, and there's a kid in some fart-can car pulls up on me. About 10 inches from my bumper, doing 69 in a 60 in the right lane of 3 lanes. He won't move, so I slow, and slow, and slow now I'm down to 50 on the I-state, plenty of room in the next lane, and he's right on me at 50. I just kept slowing until he went around with a bunch of noise and a middle finger salute.

Way home, I'm thinking maybe I'm going to slow? So I boost it up to 74, still in the right lane(didn't buy anything btw). Next guy is a black BMW pretty new and he likes my tail too much as well. This time I bump the speed up to 77(in a 65 zone), and he just sits on my tail. I can actually see his headlights BELOW the wing in my mirror. Efff this, I brake check him right down to 40MPH. Blows by and tries to cut me off, but I had my foot on the brake so that doesn't work.

Is it me? Am I being too polite? Are my expectations that a 2 car length at 75MPH is asking too much? Interestingly, on the way home a little later there was a three car smoosh in the opposite direction. Two trucks and a SUV of some kind. This stuff rarely, never happens in my wife's Mini, or when I drive my Saturn. The Porsche seems to be some kind of azzhat magnet.

Oh YA tell me about it. Especially the pick up trucks.

You can take the pick up truck out of the ******* but you can't take the ******* out of the pick up truck.

And the fart cans too. I like to pretend like I'm going to race then just ease off and let them blow by and clear the road ahead of cops.

lots of asshat drivers in the DFW area. I've found that if you drive a smaller car people will drive aggressively against you because they think that they have size and the intimidating perspective.

Happens to me all the time here in Houston, this morning I was heading to work around 0430 on the 225 in Pasadena, TX. I was doing 70 speed limit 65 in the middle lane. A new Ford pickup came up behind me, stays on my *** for a couple of minuets and then hits his brights and his the gas hard going around with only a few inches to spare. His windows are down so everyone can hear his crappy stereo and see Mr. Billy wannabe bad *** in his 600 a month truck.
I know that in a mile, the road merges to the right via a 40 mph curve onto the 146 into La Port. I speed up, get on his *** and match his 78 mph. Flash my brights and stick there as we come upon the curve. I move to the outside lane still in his rear and lay on the horn ( little pissed) as we enter the curve he tried unsuccessfully to maintain his speed and is probably shi*ing all over himself while all the crap on his dash is sliding to his side. ( his window's down)
I lowered my passenger window to flip his dumb *** off but he is way to busy trying to control his bright shiny truck to even look my way.
I exit the curve and he has slowed down considerably probably hyperventilating thanking the gods that he did not flip his boy toy. Needless to say he did not try to pass me even at 60 mph.
Moral of the story.... you don't tug on Superman's cape, you don't spit into the wind, you don't mess with man called the Lone Ranger and you don't mess around with a 928....

Hmm.
I think there are several issues at play here, and I think that they will all conspire at certain points to create misery for a 928 driver.

1) There is definitely a CRAPMAGNET effect when driving a unique, "specialty" car of any sort. Especially if the "magnetized driver" perceives the very presence of your car as a "challenge" to his own special-ness. I think this is true for any cool car. Street rods, Porsches, etc, I think they all "speak" to that very special person who wants to throw down the gauntlet at you. Not just 928s.

2) The configuration of the 928, with rear glass all the way to the very back of the car, can give you a different perspective than the shmuck who is tailgating you. To him, he's just right up on the bumper of yet another in a long list of cars he's going to tailgate. But to you, in the rearview mirror, heck, he's in the living room with his stinky feet right in your face on the couch.

My friend Mike had the ultimate solution for this, waaaay back in the 1980s with his 911.
Tired of the constant tailgating and attempted bullfights at highway speeds, he installed a Hella Off-road high beam light dead center and pointing aft on his rear bumper. It served 2 purposes.
First, he had the world's greatest back-up light. Secondly, he could "blip" the switch and quickly get the attention of the Chryslers and Datsuns behind him who were just slightly too close for comfort. He said it worked like a charm. Illegal, but effective.

Last weekend on my way home late Friday night some azzhat in some suv was tail gating me in a 55 mph construction zone, I am in the right lane doing 55 approaching my exit, it's a 25 mph hairpin with a very short decel lane. I slowd to about 48 never touching the brakes, I hold the curve like I'm on rails, and no more tailgater, azzhat had jumped the curb.

I'm leaning toward a 2 mill candlepower spot strobe. If they get close enough, may even be able to cause perm retina damage.

Same thing happens to me often. I don't have the P O R S C H E stickers on the rear bumper - just the indented text molded into the bumper. Folks pull up really close on my left rear quarter (where they are hard to see) so that the passenger can try to read it. I see them mouthing the word sometimes. We are at a point where a lot of people don't know what it is and try to get too close. I've been tailed by cars for miles, most often hovering off the left rear quarter to get that great perspective view of the 928 from that angle. One time, around dusk, I was cruising about 50 on the Fairfax County Parkway and a car pulls alongside and passes very slowly. My headlights are up, but the passenger is staring with the puzzled look. Then as they pass the passenger is looking rearward over their shoulder and I can see her say "headlights". LOL. The charms of owning a 928.

It,s not just a U.S. thing, we have the same morons driving here in the UK. so I guess there must be some kind of international tailgating club ?.., with an annual prize of who is the biggest brain dead moron in the club. They dont bother me so much when I drive my off-roader ?

In SoCal I got tailed by Audis and cars with buzzing fart cans. Lets just say they can't maintain speed up a 7% grade, or even accelerate like a 928 can . 2nd gear is the best

Plus the occasional rich kid in a BMW his parents bought him, I just like to watch them get pulled over for driving like an *** hat.

But in NorCal I get priuses, they are vicious up here. They cut you off, tailgate, and just drive stupid up here. They're like the new VW beetle

The cops are even worse up here. Once about 3 weeks ago (end of the month, coincidence?) my radar detector went off and then the signal went away, but it came back.

Getting stronger and stronger as one car got closer and closer going well above the speed limit ( I was going it).

Then I saw the headlights of a crown vic and it cut off, with less than 4 feet of space, the person behind me and then followed me for 5 miles blasting me with his radar, making my detector go mad.

I couldn't even see his headlights after that he was so close.

But anyways, you could imagine how angry I was when I finally got home, without a ticket of course.
I had to give the obligatory 1 finger salute to the cop as he turned to go back onto the freeway, it was well deserved.

Looking back on it I should have slammed on the brakes going down the hill on Highway 92. Would have made for an epic report.

You guys are lucky in DFW to only be harassed by normal people, I get targeted by cops, and I don't even speed most of the time.
