The theory, is, that we have some idle valves, that -leak-.

I have a brand new one I need to send back, that when closed, you can cleanly breathe thru.

My old one..you can move some air thru it...just some...maybe a proper new one is supposed to be way less than that.

I suppose..the best test of this theory you guys working on the ISVs now..

CLose it by hand, blow thru it, then put er in over to 200d..then (with a hose on it to but burn, duh) blow thru it again? Is it more?

Default S3 High Idle when Warm

Watching this thread, hoping there is a Eureka moment- same issue with my '85. Ken's chips, new Bosch ICV, full intake refresh. Throttle shaft o-rings, etc... perfect idle cold, climbs to 1000-1050 warm....

Set it to closed.

How hard to you have to blow, to get ANY air thru it.

I set it to all the way closed...and then attempted to pull air through it in the direction of air travel...mimicking what the engine would be doing....I had to pull hard to get any at all through..and then it was very little. I am wondering if mine wasn't closing all the way...that little "anvil" moves well past the edge of the opening before it stops traveling.

I'm in the middle of the radiator/electric fan upgrade also so I may not get to the install of the new ICV today..but based on the restrictive capability of this new valve I am hopeful.

Snap up those "Borg Warner (snicker)" ICV's boys..they are Bosch units!

That "sounds" better than my old one, which was miles better than my new one.

Hurry the hell up!

I have no idea how old mine is but it doesn't look original. It was on the car when I got it in '05. It is Bosch and I can't blow through it at all when closed.

PS. One could use nichrome wire (heating element, wife's hair dryer) instead of resistor as in my test.

Thanks for the heads up, Noobie. My "Bosch-Warner" ISV showed up from Pep Boys today. Looks like they're already all gone from the website.

I'm still a ways off from putting my everything back together, but as a fellow 1100rpm warm idler, hopefully this is one of the keys to the puzzle.

Second post relating an issue with ground to LH resulting in problems.

Granted, they were both for later S4 2.3

https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...over-temp.html

Presumably someone checked their temp sender II warm signal? My intake is powder coated, I think I'll add checking that the threads are exposed to my tick list of possible faults.

aahhh..I didn't read that thread before but just went over it now...I know where the grounds are they are talking about...they aren't difficult to reach and removal of the MAF makes them easily available..and I haven't "done" either one of them...will hit them both today and report results back.

This could mean something...as I was doing my radiator cooling fans I accessed 2 grounds that I hadn't hit in my big "ground mission" ...partly because one of them was impossible to get at until the radiator was removed (passenger side, just ahead of the coil), and the other one was a ground attached to the drivers side coil bracket.

Idle is slightly better in my car..and since heat is the enemy of electricity..could be making sense...I haven't put the new ICV in yet so I'll do this and do a test and see what happens and report.

Cleaned up the LH/EZF grounds under the hood...the one on passenger side was definitely in bad shape..oxidized etc. I bathed everything in DeOxit and wire brushed everything up real nice....didn't make really a difference...so I'm going with ICV replacement here in a day or two..

I will say the change may have made a difference in running...which makes sense if those grounds were getting bad with heat...maybe idles a little smoother....

Definitely something that should be done ...they aren't as easy to get to as I thought they'd be but once I broke them loose they unscrewed by hand easily...saved me there.

On to the next one...
